Associate Translator

1. Organizational Setting

    

   The post is located in the PCT Translation Division in the PCT Services Department of the Patents and Technology Sector. The PCT Translation Division is responsible for delivering high-quality publication-ready translation in relation to patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).  In particular, the PCT Translation Division is responsible for the translation of scientific, technical and legal documents, mainly the abstracts of international patent applications and scientific, technical and legal reports relating to the patentability of inventions.

    

    

2. Purpose Statement

    

   As part of the English Translation Section, the incumbent is required to translate technical texts from Russian into English, in a timely and efficient manner. The incumbent is also required to contribute to other translation-related activities as required.

    

    

3. Reporting Lines

    

   The incumbent works under the supervision of the Head of the English Translation Section.

    

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:

    

a.   Translate technical texts from Russian into English, within the deadlines set and according to the performance standards of the Section.

    

b.   Modify and finalize abstracts provided by other translation suppliers on demand and with a very quick turnaround time.

   

c.   Contribute to the development of reusable training materials; prepare guidelines and reference materials for the improvement of quality specifically for the Russian into English combination.

   

d.   Use and evaluate computer-assisted translation and terminology tools, providing feedback on and recommendations for their application within the Division.

    

e.   Perform other related duties as required.

  

   

Education (Essential)

 

First level university degree in translation, modern languages, linguistics, in a scientific or technical field, or in a related field.

    

Education (Desirable)

 

Advanced university degree in translation.

   

Experience (Essential)

 

At least three years of relevant professional experience and a demonstrated ability to perform technical translation from Russian to English. An advanced university degree in the above-mentioned disciplines may be accepted in lieu of two years of experience.

    

Language (Essential)

 

Mother tongue level of English and excellent knowledge of Russian (first translation language).

 

Language (Desirable)

 

Knowledge of other PCT publication languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Spanish).

Knowledge of translation technology and software tools that aid the translation process.

Annual salary\:

   

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice in accordance with the rates as set within the UN Common System for salaries and allowances.  The figures quoted below are based on the August 2019 rate of 71.8%.

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations (not applicable for the External Offices).

Temporary appointments are renewable, subject to continuing needs, availability of budget and satisfactory performance with a maximum cumulative length of two years.
