Background

UNDP’s Global Programme on Nature for Development brings together different initiatives (the Equator Initiative, the FINDERS project, the Global Platform on the New York Declaration on Forests, Learning for Nature, the Global Biodiversity Support Program and Nature-Based Spatial Planning) to identify, foster, and celebrate nature-based solutions that help achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at local, national and international levels. The work of the Global Programme on Nature for Development contributes to UNDP's Strategic Plan 2018-2021 by charting sustainable development pathways through the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of biodiversity and ecosystems; and by promoting inclusive and effective democratic governance in the area of natural resources.

Learning for Nature is a capacity-building offer provided by the Global Programme on Nature for Development, cutting across the three areas of work. This program connects biodiversity policymakers, change-makers, and on-the-ground subject matter experts to facilitate the delivery of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Access to the global multi-stakeholder networks mobilized by the different initiatives within the Global Programme on Nature for Development allows Learning for Nature to circulate knowledge while promoting best practices. Building on our learnings on the ground, Learning for Nature seeks synergies, builds linkages, and engages thousands of course participants on their journey towards sustainable development solutions for people, nature, and resilient communities. Learning for Nature provides opportunities for building capacity to scale up efforts for nature-based sustainable development through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), webinars, self-paced e-learning modules, podcasts and private training courses. Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will be home-based. Responsibilities may include but will not be limited to the following, as outlined below. Language skills are optional. Preference will be given to candidates with the knowledge of French and/or Spanish. The intern will assist the Global Programme on Nature for Development with managing its e-learning portfolio. S/he will report to the manager of the Global Programme on Nature for Development.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • As identified by the Project Manager(s), support the capacity-building aspect of the work of the Global Programme on Nature for Development through general support, content creation, instructional design, administrative support, outreach, and communications.
  • Support communications efforts, such as drafting of promotional emails, press releases, blogs, social media materials and photo stories.
  • Support outreach efforts through newsletters, social media, and direct mailing.
  • Support knowledge management efforts and gathering and dissemination of best practices, including data analysis.
  • Administrative duties, translations, and database entry as identified to ensure the smooth operation of the office.
  • Other duties as necessary.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience

  • Demonstrated interest in the fields of development, environment and education;
  • Strong writing and research skills required;
  • Prior experience working on at least one of the following topics at a conceptual level is a strong asset: biodiversity/climate change; human/civil/indigenous rights; social entrepreneurship/impact investing; civil society engagement; poverty eradication.
  • Prior experience in the education field would be an asset;
  • Prior experience (e.g. through internships or voluntary work) supporting capacity-building events and communications is considered an asset.

Language

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an asset.

Working Hours:

  • Part time, minimum three days per week;
  • Full-time availability preferred;
  • Days off will be granted as needed and in compliance with the UNDP internship policy.

Conditions for internships:            

  • The UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • The intern will need to provide proof of health and life/accident insurance;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
