Background

UN Women Background:* UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background: UN Women maintains a large presence throughout Europe and the Central Asia region. The UN Women Europe and Central Asia Regional Office was established in Istanbul, Turkey in early 2014. It provides support and oversight to Country Offices in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Ukraine. In addition, the Regional Office directly supports programme and project presence in Kosovo (under UN Security Council Resolution 1244), Serbia, North Macedonia, Tajikistan and Turkey.

Since 1999, UN Women Kosovo (still then as UNIFEM), together with other UN agencies and international partners, has been providing technical assistance to partners in Kosovo to promote women’s rights and gender equality. UN Women continues to provide technical assistance to key security actors as well as to women’s organizations to effectively implement national and international commitments to women, peace and security in Kosovo. UN Women has implemented the ‘Gender-Sensitive Transitional Justice’ project, funded by European Union (January 2015 - October 2018), whose overarching goal was to enhance the effectiveness of gender sensitive transitional justice processes to contribute to a more just and stable society, by prioritizing victims and considering the different needs of conflict-affected populations.

Furthermore, UN Women supports the Regional Women’s Lobby for Peace, Security and Justice in Southeast Europe (RWLSEE), which is a regional women’s peacebuilding and mediation organization with the mission to advocate and lobby for gender equality and women empowerment in decision making, peace, security and justice processes.

UN Women is also part of the joint UN project ‘Empowering Youth for a Peaceful, Prosperous, and Sustainable Future in Kosovo’, in which UN Women engages positive influencers of a shared future, namely young women and men from communities divided by perpetuation of conflict dynamics, who have been under-represented in leadership to work together on issues of shared interest and concern and become more active changemakers who will catalyze peace and trust-building efforts in Kosovo.
