Background

The UNDP-GEF Project: Strengthening human resources, legal frameworks, and institutional capacities to implement the Nagoya Protocol (“Global ABS project”, GEF ID 5731; 2016-2019), Nagoya; is a 3-year project that specifically aims at assisting countries in the development and strengthening of their national Access and Benefits-Sharing (ABS) frameworks, human resources, and administrative capabilities to implement the Nagoya Protocol.

The overall objective of the project is to assist countries in the development and strengthening of their national ABS frameworks, human resources and administrative capabilities to implement the Nagoya Protocol. The expected outcomes of the project are:

1. Strengthening the legal, policy and institutional capacity to develop national ABS frameworks.2. Building trust between users and providers of genetic resources to facilitate the identification of bio-discovery efforts.3. Strengthening the capacity of indigenous and local communities to contribute to the imple-mentation of the Nagoya Protocol.4. Implementing a community of practices on ABS and South-South Cooperation mechanisms.

Based on a cooperation opportunity, the UNV programme will support the implementation of the UNDP-GEF project through a programmatic component and funding from its Global Programme on Community Resilience for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and the Strategic Framework 2014-2017. UNV will highlight the importance of volunteerism in support of institutional capacity-building, awareness-raising and south-south cooperation activities towards the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol. In five countries in the Latin American region, UNV will seek to build capacities of national volunteers in order for them to serve as valuable social assets in fostering the participation of indigenous and local communities (ILCs) in national ABS policy-making processes and in raising awareness of the importance of genetic resources, traditional knowledge and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from their use. At the global level, UNV will contribute to establishing a community of practice on ABS as a means of sharing knowledge between participating countries and facilitating the mapping of experts and technical needs with regard to ABS through a global cooperation framework on ABS.

In this context, the UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project is looking for a motivated and self-driven individual, who wishes to join a global team that promotes the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing. This represent an excellent opportunity for individuals who seek to strengthen their understanding on the topic of Access and Benefit Sharing.
