Background

UN Women BackgroundUN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project BackgroundUnder the direct supervision and guidance of Web Editor, the intern will assist the Communications & Advocacy Section in posting, researching, editing and drafting content for the UN Women global website. A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon. This internship can be extended up to six months.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Web Editor at the Communications & Advocacy Division, the intern shall perform the following assignments, which may vary in accordance with the priorities of the Division:

  1. Web production and outreach
    • The intern will post content, including photos and other media on UN Women global websites
    • The intern will identify, in collaboration with the team, external blogs and platforms to cross-post and distribute content
    • The intern will assist in repurposing and cross-posting content on external blogs and platforms
    • The intern will maintain a database of stories published by UN Women and assist with identifying and cross promoting content from UN Women regional and country websites
  2. Editorial assistance
    • The intern will assist with editing, proof reading and drafting content for the website as needed
    • The intern will assist with coordination of translation of content
    • The intern will support editorial/web production for special events and key occasions, such as International Days and key events at the UN, through research, drafting of blurbs and other content
    • The intern will assist with attending events, as and when needed, that take place at the UN/UN Women and draft news content
  3. Other tasks as requested by the Editorial team

  • Communications skills: Learn to use HTML and Content Management system for creative web productions; demonstrated learning in drafting or supporting the development of web content for a diverse international audience.
  • Teamwork and client orientation: Strengthen teamworking skills and experience in working with diverse, multi-cultural environment; learn more about UN Women and its work on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Planning and organizing: Demonstrated learning and support in planning, researching for content packages and maintaining content database; supporting communications efforts for events and conferences at the UN.

Functional competencies:

  • Proficiency in using new technologies, content management systems and web-based platforms. Knowledge of HTML, other scripts and web design are a plus.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in Journalism or Communications or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; Working knowledge of French/ Sapanish would be considered a distinct advantage

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

    1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
    3. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in 1.1 or 1.2 above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  2. UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  3. All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  4. UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  5. The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  6. Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to positions in the professional and above category in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  7. The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
