INTERNSHIP CONTEXT

WFP Tanzania is implementing its Country Strategic Plan (CSP) 2017-2021. The CSP envisions the following under Strategic Objective 5 (SO5): INNOVATION; WFP and its partners in Tanzania and beyond are facilitated to foster, test, refine and scale up innovation that contributes to the achievement of the SDGs by 2030.

The internship is to support the SO5 field innovation hub launched in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in May 2017 in collaboration with the WFP Innovation Accelerator. The hub serves as a sandbox for piloting and scaling up innovation ideas supported by the WFP Innovation Accelerator and identify relevant locally designed innovations.

In 2019, the WFP field innovation hub has started to execute its new innovation strategy, with two main pillars: 1) continue working with national and international pilot projects and build 2) a set of interventions to activate and strengthen the local innovation eco-system together with local partners (entrepreneur support schemes, mentoring, innovation events, business services, community management). Complementing these two pillars the Hub also seeks to 3) support CO operations to continuously improve through innovation.

This internship is linked to the third pillar and specifically targeted at innovations related to Supply Chain.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under the direct supervision of CO Innovation Hub staff and the general guidance of the Head of Innovation and Head of Supply Chain, the intern will support the country office (CO) in identifying and realizing a number of small internal Supply Chain related innovation projects.

The Intern will perform the following duties:

  • Assist in the identification, solution design and implementation of lean / continuous improvement projects; specifically:
  • Conduct research, qualitative and quantitative, at HQ and in the field, to assess specific issue areas, as provided by the Head of Supply Chain
  • Design digital and non-digital solutions to streamline and improve Supply Chain related processes
  • Prototype such digital and non-digital solutions, as applicable
  • Advise and support a possible roll out of such a prototyped solution
  • As well as, proactively identifying additional issue areas and possible solutions
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Tanzanian citizenship.
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor or Master’s degree programme and have attended courses in the last 12 months OR recent graduate of a Master’s degree (graduated within the last 12 months);
  • Excellent English verbal and writing skills;
  • Familiarity with innovation methodologies such as human-centered design and lean startup;
  • Familiarity with operational improvement methodologies, such as lean six sigma
  • Ability to easily connect with people of different cultures, navigate language barriers and ability to mobilize and excite people
  • Basic programming skills and digital literacy: ability to build simple process support tools with the help of Tableu, VBA, SQL, Javascript; Python is a plus
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point); G Suite knowledge is a plus

ONLY applicants with Tanzanian citizenship who are currently enrolled in a Bachelor or Master’s degree programme and have attended courses in the last 12 months OR recent graduate of a Master’s degree (graduated within the last 12 months) can apply.

  • Ability to easily connect with people of different cultures, navigate language barriers and ability to mobilize and excite people
  • Basic programming skills and digital literacy: ability to build simple process support tools with the help of Tableu, VBA, SQL, Javascript; Python is a plus

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should have:

  • Good knowledge of WFP approach to innovation;
  • First-hand exposure to WFP innovation in the field in Tanzania;
  • Good knowledge of WFP Supply Chain processes and ways of working;
  • First-hand experience with Supply Chain improvement projects.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP per month depending on the duty station of assignment. 
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;
