Organizational Setting
The Office of Legal Affairs, which reports directly to the Director General, provides legal services of the highest possible standards to the Director General, the Secretariat and to the organs and bodies of the IAEA, as well as to Member States, regarding the implementation of the IAEA's activities.
Main Purpose
Reporting to the Director, the Section Head leads a professional team that ensures that the IAEA's non-proliferation and safeguards activities are carried out in accordance with the Statute, applicable agreements, as well as resolutions and decisions of the Policy-Making Organs.
Role
The Section Head is\: (1) a leader and manager, providing guidance and managerial support to the team, and planning resources with a view to achieving efficient and effective results; (2) a substantive expert, leveraging knowledge and experience in the field to policy development and operations; (3) a legal adviser on matters of policy, strategy, and complex cases.
Functions / Key Results Expected
- Lead and manage an effective team of professionals and staff, promoting internal and external collaboration, and ensuring, through learning opportunities, work assignments and recruitment, an effective balance of skills and resources.
- Supervise the Section and co-ordinate and ensure high quality of the work produced by other members in his/her Section.
- Negotiate and provide advice on the interpretation and implementation of international conventions, agreements and other instruments related to the work of the Section, in the area of non-proliferation and Agency safeguards.
- Research and prepare drafts of legal opinions, studies, briefs, reports and correspondence relating to the functions, structure and activities of the IAEA related to the area of work of the Section.
- Provide legal advice and interpretations in connection with the IAEA's Policy-Making Organs.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
Master's Degree - Advanced university degree in law with a good academic record. Member of a national bar.
At least 10 years of professional experience encompassing the relevant areas of law in a comparable organization (such as an international organization, public sector or non-profit organization).
Significant experience in non-proliferation and safeguards, and in treaty and nuclear law.
Demonstrated experience in responsible positions of a supervisory/managerial nature and ability to manage human, financial and material resources towards the achievement of stated objectives, to provide feedback and to encourage staff development.
Demonstrated analytical skills in drawing well-balanced conclusions when dealing with complex issues.
Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $87108 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 35279, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
