Organizational Setting
The Forestry Department ensures the development of policies, strategies and guidelines and provides advisory and technical services to FAO Members. It collects, analyses, disseminates information to FAO Members, and serves as a neutral forum for policy and technical dialogue between nations on matters related to forests. The Department promotes the FAO mission in forestry, which is to enhance human well-being through support to member countries in the sustainable management of the world's trees and forests.
The World Forestry Congress serves as a forum for governments, universities, civil society and the private sector to exchange views and experiences and to formulate recommendations for implementation at national, regional and global levels. The Congress also provides an opportunity for the sector to produce an overview of the state of forests and forestry in order to discern trends, adapt policies and raise awareness of issues among decision-makers, the public and other parties concerned.
FAO's work in organizing the XV World Forestry Congress supports implementation of FAO's Strategic Programme 2 'Making agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable'.
The post is located in the Office of the Assistant Director-General, Forestry Department.

Reporting Lines
The Forestry Officer reports to the Associate Secretary-General, XV World Forestry Congress, under the overall guidance of the Assistant Director-General, Forestry Department.

Technical Focus
Process the technical inputs from participants and other contributors to the XV World Forestry Congress and organize their review and dissemination, and manage the speaker process.

Key Results
Research, technical analysis, and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions
• Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services;
• Produces a variety of technical information, data, statistics and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages;
• Provides technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies and initiatives and provides technical backstopping to field projects;
• Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes, and databases;
• Participates in multidisciplinary teams, and/or leads working groups/teams collaborates with other departments and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices;
• Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within member countries such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials, online tools;
• Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations;
• Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO’s Corporate strategy.

Specific Functions
• Organizes the process for invitation, review and dissemination of the Congress papers (commissioned papers, voluntary papers, posters and videos);
• Supervises and guides the development of a database for Congress papers and manages the database;
• Produces guidelines for the papers and the review process;
• Supports the process to manage the speakers at the Congress;
• Contributes to the technical content preparation of the Congress;
• Supports active participation in the Congress by global and regional organizations, academic institutions and the private sector;
• Provides information about sponsorship opportunities for students, members of civil society and indigenous peoples and manages the sponsorship process;
• Performs any other relevant duties as requested.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in forest resources management or a related field;
• Five years of relevant experience in forestry or natural resources management or a related field;
• Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other FAO official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills
• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions is desirable;

• Extent and relevance of experience in supporting international meetings and conferences as well as reviewing and disseminating conference documentation;
• Extent and relevance of experience with sponsorship programmes;
• Extent and relevance of experience in supporting international meetings and conferences.
