OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Division Mandate\:

To provide leadership and action and to support Member States in attaining a greater level of awareness for the promotion of healthy environments and populations by addressing key health-related social, environmental and behavioural risk factors and determinants. This programme will respond to the needs of the population in the aspects of lifestyle approach to the impact of climate change, and noncommunicable diseases, healthy environment, health promotion and related health systems to promote healthy social and physical environments where people live, study, work and play as a substantial and essential element of Sustainable Development, Health Equity and Gender Inequities.

Unit Mandate\:

To help countries prevent and control noncommunicable conditions - such as cardiovascular, disease, chronic respiratory disease, cancer, diabetes, and their risk factors through comprehensive and multisectoral policies, plans, and programmes including population-based and individual-based approaches, monitoring and reporting, as well as promoting health at local and national levels by providing guidance for national policies and programmes to slow down and reverse the adverse trends in the common noncommunicable disease risk factors.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Director, Healthy Environments and Populations, and in collaboration with relevant units, the incumbent will perform the following functions\:

1. Support implementation of the Regional Action Plan (RAP) for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (2014-2020);

2. Support Member States in the implementation of NCD risk factor surveys, including the WHO STEPwise approach to Surveillance (STEPS) survey and Global school-based student health survey, and other global surveys, including the NCD Country Capacity Survey;

3. Collaborate with relevant units to support Member States strengthen their health information systems and national capacity for data management, analysis and reporting;

4. Assist in the preparation of progress reports and the development of guidance documents and publications, communication for NCD prevention and control and health promotion; and

5. Provide technical inputs and support in planning and developing relevant communications and advocacy products for community and resource mobilization activities;

6. Support in management of ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) project through coordination with relevant units working with ACP funds.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: University degree in medicine and postgraduate degree (master's degree or higher) in public health or related field from recognized university.


Desirable\: Minimum of one year of epidemiology training at international level.

Experience

Essential\: Minimum of five years' experience in public health, and prevention and surveillance of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and their risk factors with some international exposure in relevant fields.


Desirable\: Minimum one year of advanced training or experience in noncommunicable diseases prevention and surveillance at national or international level.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 60,233 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2229 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
