The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Learning areas

The Strategic Compliance Team of the LABADMIN/OSH Branch, seeks a dynamic and energetic intern to support the work of the team as we guide labour inspectorates in the design, development, and implementation of innovative and proactive compliance strategies, using the ILO’s Approach to Strategic Compliance Planning for Labour Inspectorates,

As an intern, you will be exposed to a whole range of areas such as institutional development of systems of labour administration and labour inspection, analysis of international trends and national situation in terms of compliance with labour legislation and occupational safety and health standards, preparation of working papers, reports and other publications on labour inspection and other compliance mechanisms on subjects such as fundamental principles and rights, working conditions, vulnerable workers, and  occupational safety and health.

You would be gaining experience in working with specialists who are involved in the following tasks e.g. policy and technical advice to ministries of labour, social partners and other actors within labour administration and occupational safety and health systems on governance issues, labour inspection and compliance policies, strategies, methods and tools, national policies and programmes for the development of safety and health at work, design of capacity building  materials such as training tools, organization of technical meetings, seminars and workshops, and comparative research on labour administration, labour inspection, compliance and occupational safety and health.

The specific duties consist of the following: 

  • Researching, collecting and mapping real world examples of innovative compliance strategies by labour inspectorates
  • Participating in the development of concept notes, academic articles, and promotional materials on innovative compliance strategies by labour inspectorates
  • Supporting efforts to document and track country experiences implementing the Strategic Compliance Capacity Building Programme
  • Participating in team and branch meetings
  • Undertaking any other related task as requested by supervisors.

Note:  Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Required profile
Education

The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 years ago in law, public policy, or social sciences.

Experience

 Relevant work experience or knowledge in the field of labour administration, labour inspection or occupational safety and health would be an advantage. 

Languages

Proficient in English or Spanish (both oral and written).  Knowledge of another ILO official language (English, French, or Spanish) or Arabic would be an advantage.

Competencies

Ability to think strategically, innovate, and work in an international, multicultural, and multilingual environment.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to draft clearly and concisely for the purpose of preparing reports, studies and tools.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2245 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2245 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.

Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
