ILO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for talented individuals to:

(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Department

The Department of Partnerships and Field Support (PARDEV) establishes and develops strategic partnerships in close interaction with other portfolios and the regions. It is responsible for developing the ILO’s development cooperation strategy, and leads consultations and negotiations with development cooperation partners. It is responsible for mobilizing voluntary contributions for the ILO’s programme as well as coordinating development and financial reporting to donors. Finally, in close collaboration with other portfolios, PARDEV facilitates the streamlining of work processes and procedures, and provides assistance to enhance service delivery in the field.

The Department comprises three units: the Development Partners and Donor Relations Unit, the Development Cooperation Support Unit (DCSU) and the Emerging and Special Partnership Unit (ESPU). The current internship relates to DCSU.

The Development Cooperation Support Unit (DCSU) deals with development cooperation (DC) policies, quality assurance of ILO’s development cooperation programme, provides project development design support, delivers staff development on project cycle management and DC, develops statistical data on ILO’s DC portfolio, and facilitates knowledge sharing in the area of ILO’s development cooperation. Many of these areas are supported by online platforms (e.g. SharePoint), websites or dashboards.   

Learning area

The Intern will support the DCSU team in the areas of design support, the preparation of Development Cooperation learning journeys for ILO staff and development of practical tools, communication and knowledge products and activities related to the ILO’s development cooperation portfolio.

The Intern will work in close communication with the team in DCSU, other staff in PARDEV as well as with staff at the International Training Centre of the ILO in Turin. In addition, the Intern will ex-change with ILO development cooperation practitioners in the field and at HQ.   

Under the overall supervision of the Head of DCSU, and in close consultation with other relevant colleagues in PARDEV, the Intern will carry out the following tasks:

  • Assist in the implementation of an enhanced design support facility by supporting the establishment of a roster of project design consultants, the formulation of terms of reference, monitoring of design support activities; organization of a workshop with the design consultants, development of design guidance, etc.;
  • Assist in research and formulation of analytical briefs, papers and presentations related to development cooperation within the ILO and the UN at large;
  • Assist in the appraisal of project documents, and the monitoring of the appraisal workflow;
  • Assist in the reporting on ILO DC financial data in line with international transparency standards;
  • Assist users of the DC Dashboard and develop FAQs, graphs and infographics on ILO DC data;
  • Upload to and generally support the dissemination of posts, news items, videos. tools, etc. in the Development Cooperation Community of Practice, the DC learning journeys platform, PARDEV and/or ILO intra and internet  announcements, etc.;
  • Assist with answering internal and external inquiries, including research, gathering, consolidating and presenting information in a timely manner relevant to the specific audience.
  • Carry out other assignments as requested.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Required profile
Education

The candidate should be enrolled in the final year of a graduate degree programme in International Relations, Development Cooperation, Educational Sciences, Organizational Development, Social Sciences or related fields; or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago.

Experience

At least two years’ research and/or work experience in development cooperation, Project Cycle Management or related topic. Work experience and knowledge of IT (e.g. SharePoint) would be an advantage.

Languages

A good working knowledge (both oral and written) of at least one of the ILO’s official languages (English/French/Spanish)

Competencies

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to carry out assignments in accordance with instructions and guidelines; ability to write, rewrite and edit clearly and accurately in English; ability to conceptualise, plan, coordinate, conduct and write up straightforward research work with a minimum of supervision; ability to draft reports, presentations and documents in English; ability to integrate and work in multicultural teams and a multicultural environment; good computer skills, including excellent knowledge of Word. Previous work in international organizations or NGOs would be useful.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2245 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2245 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.

Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
