1.    Organizational Context


 


  1. Organizational Setting

     

    The role of the Translation and Terminology Technology Section (TTTS) is to enable and support translation and terminology activities on a technical level throughout the Organization; supply and maintain translation and terminology management systems and applications to the Organization; enable coordinated translation and localization activities across the Organization in the six languages of the UN and ten languages of the PCT; and enable extensive exploitation of neural machine translation by the translation areas.

     

  2. Purpose Statement

     

    The Senior Translation Technologist is responsible for executing tasks relating to translation technology for the Section and for other translation areas within the Organization.

     

  3. Reporting Lines

     

    The incumbent reports to the Head of the Translation and Terminology Technology Section.

     

     


2.     Duties and Responsibilities


 


The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:


 


a.  Devise approaches and specifications for the design, introduction and implementation of computer aids to translation, install, upgrade and maintain translation and terminology-related applications and maintain the Division’s on-premise physical and cloud-based machine translation infrastructure;


 


b.  Maintain the Division’s neural machine translation (NMT) engines by retraining existing engines as new data becomes available, and improving the machine translation pipelines;


 


c.  Develop new machine translation engines for patentability reports (WOSAs, IPRP2s, ISRs) in collaboration with the Advanced Technology Applications Center (ATAC);


 


d.  Maintain and further develop the Division’s neural Machine Translation Quality Estimation (MTQE) score or oversee outsourcing of this requirement where necessary;


 


e.  Keep up to date with the latest developments in translation technology in the fields of translation,  terminology, and machine translation, report to the PCT Translation Division periodically on these topics and establish links with other organizations and institutions to promote an active exchange of information on the use of translation technology and machine translation systems;


 


f.   Conduct research and development activities on adaptive and interactive machine translation systems and customizable NMT translation platforms and participate in the design of novel translation interfaces that include adaptive and interactive machine translation;


 


g.  Identify bi- or multi-lingual non-patent literature (NPL) corpora containing company names, applicant names, and scientific journal titles, in view of exploiting them via machine translation;


 


h.  Perform other related duties as required.


 


 


3.     Requirements


 


Education


Essential


Advanced university degree in computational linguistics, computer engineering, artificial intelligence, information technology, mathematics, or a similar technical discipline, with demonstrated experience and knowledge of the application of machine translation, neural networks, and artificial intelligence.  A first-level university degree in one of the aforementioned disciplines plus two years of relevant experience in addition to the experience mentioned below may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

At least seven years of relevant professional experience in translation technology such as translation management systems (TMS), machine translation, neural networks, and artificial intelligence.


 


Language


Essential


Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English.


 


Desirable


Good knowledge of one of the following languages\:  Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish.

A full and up-to-date understanding of translation-related technology such as translation and terminology management systems, computer-assisted translation tools, and neural machine translation technology.

5.      Information


 


Mobility\:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.


 


Annual salary\:


Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice.  The figures quoted below are based on the September 2019 rate of 76.4%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
