Organizational Setting The overall goal of the REBYC-II LAC project is to facilitate more sustainable use of fisheries resources and healthier marine ecosystems in the project region in order to support sustainable livelihoods. The outputs include collaborative governance, cost-effective solutions and effective incentives to minimize the by-catch of juveniles, species at risk, discards and impacts on sea-bed habitats, improved utilization of sustainable by-catch, and reduced operational costs in bottom/shrimp trawl fisheries in the region. Furthermore, the project seeks to improve local livelihoods in the face of management changes. It also builds regional synergies to achieve balance between environmental well-being and human well-being. The project facilitates participatory governance approaches where fishers, managers and other key stakeholders work together to improve by-catch management. Primary stakeholders’ knowledge and capacity on by-catch and adaptive collaborative management are a key instrument. The sense of ownership of stakeholders is being enhanced through collective-choice arrangements encouraging responsible fishing. Institutional arrangements for public/private partnership will be encouraged. Key project stakeholders include national and local fisheries authorities, the private fishing sector (fishers, processors and retailers), fishing communities and organizations in project pilot sites, regional fisheries organizations( including the CRFM, OSPESCA, Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC)), the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystems project (CLME ), NOAA, WWF, and various universities and research institutes in the region. FAO provides technical assistance to ensure that the project activities benefit from experiences elsewhere and meet current practices. Since its inception the project has created a significant amount of knowledge and has been using various means to disseminate it against stakeholders. However, there is not an appropriate monitoring of how this information is actually impacting stakeholders or if it is effect. Based on this the project also requires support in organizing project outputs and creating practical and implementable summaries that make information easily digestible for stakeholders and policy makers alike. Reporting Lines The Knowledge Management Consultant will work under the direct supervision of the REBYC-II LAC Regional Project Coordinator and in coordination with other relevant FAO officers.
