Our team and mission

Under the direct authority of the Head of the Space Transportation Strategy and Customer Relations, the Space Transportation Strategy and Policy Office is responsible for:

  • proposing elements for the strategy for the European space transportation sector;
  • elaborating documents submitted to the ESA Council and its delegate bodies for decision, in coordination with the Directorate’s departments and services, and with the Director General’s Cabinet and other competent services of the Agency, and in particular programme proposals for Ministerial Council decisions;
  • ensuring the coherence of all documents submitted to the ESA Council and its delegate bodies for decision;
  • proposing the content and leading the Directorate’s participation in the negotiation of agreements, keeping a registry of agreements and monitoring their implementation;
  • managing the Directorate’s activities for export control and technology transfer and the relevant interactions with the Industrial Policy Committee;
  • supporting the Heads of Department and Programme Managers in the drafting, negotiation and approval process of all launchers-related documents, submitted to Council or its delegate bodies, while ensuring their coherence;
  • monitoring and assessing the impact of the evolution of the worldwide political and industrial landscape on the launcher sector and performing studies of a strategic and economic nature for the launchers sector;
  • performing high-level analysis of developments in European space transportation firms’ shareholdings, in particular changes in control outside Europe, mergers and acquisitions;
  • collecting market intelligence through monitoring and assessing the evolution of the worldwide launch service offer and of the worldwide commercial market demand for launch services and providing regular worldwide launcher sector analyses;
  • supporting the Head of the Space Transportation Strategy and Customer Relations Department in the preparation of the Directorate’s contribution to the Agency’s Long-Term Plan.

Field(s) of activity

The Space Transportation Strategy and Policy Office is looking for a highly motivated young graduate to perform comprehensive analysis on specific topics relevant to worldwide demand for launch services, the business environment and opportunities for space transportation services and related market intelligence activities, including, in particular, involvement in the following activities:

  • monitoring, collecting and reporting financial and strategic information related to worldwide markets for launch services and satellite market demand;
  • analysing business trends and business cases in the space transportation sector;
  • assessing evolutions in commercially-driven new services for space transportation and changes in business environment;
  • performing research and gathering of data for microeconomic analysis in the launcher sector and accordingly performing economic analyses, providing economic advice and proposing economic indicators with respect to business cases of launcher prime contractors and other industrialists, launch service providers and aggregators;
  • supporting systematic approaches for the collection, processing and analysis of market-related information through informatics tools  and coordination of internal users; recommending associated business intelligence solutions;
  • contributing to maintaining up-to-date the database on satellite demand for launch services, including technical and financial information;
  • contributing to the continued implementation of a Market Intelligence Tool including the definition and processing of queries;
  • comprehensive analysis of indicators on the socio-economic impact of space transportation, establishment of related databases, and report automatisation;
  • follow-up of shareholding developments among European space transportation industrial entities, in particular changes in control outside Europe, as well as mergers and acquisitions, establishment of related databases; and
  • supporting the Head of Office on identified tasks where necessary.

You should have just completed, or be in the final year of a university course at Master's level (or equivalent) in economics or business administration.

Additional requirements

Knowledge of the space transportation or satellite sectors is required.

You should be familiar with the use of databases, associated informatics software (e.g. advanced Excel, Access, database design) and complex computer programmes for data mining.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

You should demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team. Analytical and writing skills together with pro-activeness to problem-solving are essential.
