Post
Young Graduate Trainee for Earth Observation User and Data Access Services Analysis

This post is classified F1.

Location

ESRIN, Frascati, Italy

Our team and mission

The Mission Management and Ground Segment Department is responsible for the management, design, coordination and operation of the ESA Earth observation Payload Data Ground Segment (PDGS). The PDGS is made up of systems deployed at a number of facilities dedicated to the acquisition, archiving, processing and dissemination of data from Earth observation missions. The Department is also responsible for data acquisition and dissemination of several non-ESA missions. To carry out the PDGS activities, it procures services from European industry.

The ESA Ground Segment and Data Management Division is responsible for providing data and information to the technical and scientific Earth observation user communities. The available data is published over the ESA catalogues and discoverable on EOP web sites (e.g. https://earth.esa.int/). The data from ESA and third-party institution missions is an asset managed by ESA through deployment of internal services for data consolidation, re-processing, archiving and conservation. The Earth observation data, in raw or processed format, is managed, stored and treated by different systems or services in the different domains.

Candidates interested are encouraged to visit the ESA website: http://www.esa.int

Field(s) of activity

The increased volume and diversity of satellite data on offer, technology evolution and a more demanding and dynamic user community require ESA to adapt services to improve the information outreach and data dissemination. As part of assigned activities, you will define measured indexes derived by analysing and consolidating a set of non-homogenous information collected from various systems and services. The defined indexes will be automatically processed to generate reports and statistics accordingly.

The challenge here is to capture statistics on data and services utilisation even when the user is interacting with a platform not directly managed by ESA.

The Traineeship opportunity is offered in PDGS service delivery and monitoring, covering the full data supply chain from acquisition to dissemination and from user request to service fulfillment.

As a YGT you will initially familiarise yourself with the current capabilities of the PDGS in collecting information for analysis and with the currently-used platform (https://esatellus.service-now.com/) in order to propose and eventually implement possible improvements to the measurement, monitoring and reporting mechanisms.

As main tasks, you will be requested to:

  • familiarise yourself with the current PDGS systems and services including already-implemented monitoring and measurement solutions
  • research the domain for the most common standardised solutions available on the market
  • propose and, at least in part, implement a PDGS monitoring and measurement solution
