Description of task

Within his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer - Business Development Officer for Waste Management will work closely with the UNDP BRH Urban Team as they go about servicing requests for project-related assistance from country-level, requests from donors for suggested areas of investment, and/or requests from private sector (especially multinationals) on identifying transformative solutions to unsustainable production and consumption systems, with a focus on plastic and waste. More specifically, the UN Volunteer will:

Under the direct supervision of the Urban Development Specialist, and in continuous consultation with the Program Advisor (Chemicals) and the CO clients, the UN Volunteer will provide assistance to the team:

  • Primarily in the write up of proposals relating to sustainable management of plastics and wastes;
  • Assisting the team in ensuring that there is quality control of proposals to meet donor expectations of quality of information provided, templates for proposals are followed etc.;
  • The UN Volunteer will also help ensure that all requests and revisions are completed during the proposal finalization process; and
  • If requested, the UN Volunteer may be asked to do research as needed to help bring background information and substance to a proposal (e.g. on country context, interventions that have been tried in other countries and that may be replicated etc.).

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Advanced higher degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies and Management, Chemical Engineering, Sustainable Development, International Development or a relevant area to solid waste management or chemicals (plastics). A first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;

Required experience: 60 Months Experience remark:
  • Bachelor's degree with at least 8 years (or Master's with 5 years) of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in environment, chemicals, solid waste management, or circular economy, or other relevant programmes; experience with resource mobilization or business development is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
  • Proven experience on project formulation and writing proposals projects (incl. budgets) for donors (i.e. the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Adaptation Fund (AF), GCF, bilateral donors) is highly desirable.
  • Excellent English oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Oral and written skills in Japanese and/or Korean is highly regarded, but not mandaory;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Sound security awareness;
  • Have affinity with or interest in circular economy, human-centered system thinking, and volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
