Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) within the Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent will report directly to the UNPA Graphic Design and Marketing Team Lead and under the overall direction of the Chief, UNPA.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Graphic Arts and Marketing Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

•Conceptualizes and develops designs for United Nations stamps and related philatelic and promotional products, including annual collection folders, multi-lingual philatelic bulletins, advertisements and packaging.
•Prepares all approved designs in electronic format for final review and printing; reviews color and print proofs as required.
•Coordinates marketing and promotional programmes to promote the sale of UN stamps.

Graphic Design
•Participates in initial meetings with clients to discuss potential design projects, e.g. substantive content, communication objectives, and design options, technical specifications, costs, schedules/deadlines, etc.
•Independently undertakes design assignments, including high priority requests, for a variety of UN-sponsored activities; conceptualizes and develops design proposals for review by clients, which may include photographic, illustrative or more abstract graphic solutions.
•Creates graphic material for varied print and electronic media projects such as stamps, envelopes, cachets, brochures, catalogues, flyers, posters, and newsletters.
•Researches, identifies, and recommends potential artists for the commission of stamp projects.
•Provides guidance and support throughout the project production process; coordinates and follows-up with clients and other relevant parties (e.g. copy and proofreaders, printers, production staff, etc.) and ensures that projects are on schedule.
•Sets standards and controls the visual looks of UNPA sale counters, website, promotion and marketing materials, etc.
•Designs and develops displays for use at the UN stamp shop and philatelic exhibitions.

Marketing and Promotion
•Researches, compiles and verifies background material for marketing and promotional material; Designs promotional materials for use in different marketing channels, including advertising, direct mail, internet and e-mail.
•Incorporates images of new products onto the website and associated sale systems; converts designs into formats for use on websites and social media platforms as needed using Photoshop or other graphic design software.
•Coordinates multiple marketing and promotional programmes to promote the sales of UN stamps and other products as set out in the Annual Marketing Plan (e.g. advertising, websites, direct mail, exhibits, and market research); evaluates responses to promotional programmes.
•Coordinates and assists with UN stamp launches and other promotional events.

Other
•Operates UNPA printing equipment when needed for promotional materials, posters, presentation boards, etc.
•Performs other related work as required.

Competencies

Professionalism: Knowledge of standard industry production and printing processes, including stamps design and layout. Knowledge of security printing practices and operations. Knowledge of photography, page layout and photograph sizing. Graphic art skills and demonstrated ability to independently develop creative designs and produce high-quality graphic material for varied print media projects (e.g. stamps, posters, brochures, press kits, book covers, book designs, etc.). Ability to handle multiple design projects simultaneously. Knowledge of principles and practices pertaining to the marketing and promotion of philatelic or collectible items. Ability to work with online sale website. Education

High school diploma or equivalent in required.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of Graphic Design and layout or related experience is required.
Experience conceptualizing and illustrating designs is required.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator, and In-design is required.
Experience in sales, marketing and promotion is required.
Experience designing postage stamps and philatelic products is desirable.
Experience working with Security Printers is desirable.
Experience working in the United Nations Common System or similar international organization is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.

Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year.

This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Staff members who were granted a fixed-term, continuing or permanent appointment as a result of having passed a predecessor test recognized by the Office of Human Resources Management, and who have continuously held such appointments, are not required to take the new test.
