BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency fighting hunger. WFP reaches more than 80 million people every day - delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with smallholder farmers, communities and governments to improve nutrition and build resilience.

 

The WFP Innovation Accelerator has been named one of the top 10 innovative companies 2017 by FastCompany for operating a real startup accelerator to disrupt global hunger at the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). It identifies, supports and scales high potential solutions to hunger worldwide - both WFP innovators and external start-ups with $50-100K cash, hands-on support by our team and access to WFP's global operations in developing countries in a 3-6 month sprint programme. ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Consultant, reporting to the Head of Business Development, is expected to:

  1. Support knowledge management content creation, curation and sharing of knowledge of the Innovation Accelerator activities:
  • Collate and analyse existing formal and informal information products and streams of content within the WFP Innovation Accelerator and its projects;
  • Analyse and organize the knowledge management inputs to create the structure and outline of the Accelerator knowledge management roadmap;
  • Create information repositories, as applicable, to include best practices and lessons learned related to the set-up and implementation of innovation activities;
  • Establish and ensure regular updating of a repository of knowledge products (both WFP’s and external partners’) and coordinate information gathering;
  • Identify knowledge management bottlenecks and create processes to resolve these and further streamline knowledge sharing;
  • Define priority audiences for knowledge sharing;
  • Develop and implement innovative activities to identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness of knowledge sharing across the innovation eco-system;
  • Develop the innovation knowledge management tool kit and collection of template documents for process-standardization;
  • Define and prioritise communication channels and platforms for knowledge sharing
  • Design digital assets such as social media posts, blogs, graphics, audio podcasts, video clips with the support of Accelerator Communications team;
  • Engage the WFP Innovation Champion community across WFP global offices, NGOs, implementing partners and local innovation ecosystems to leverage best practice, data collation and information dissemination;
  • Assist with project knowledge sharing requirements and information management between the Accelerator, project leads and internal and external stakeholders.

 

  1. Support the Innovation Accelerator needs as required:
  • Support core processes of the Accelerator (e.g. innovation challenge; bootcamps; sprint programme; thought leadership; scale-up enablement) as required;
  • Prepare applicable outputs including talking points, briefings, PowerPoint presentations and reports for management, inter-agency opportunities, donor related activities and innovation eco-system;
  • Assist the Head of Innovation Accelerator, as well as Director of Innovation and Knowledge Management with other activities as required;
  • Execute any other task required to support the activities of the Innovation Accelerator.

 

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

  • Ensure that all work and materials developed during the contract are well documented and available to the WFP Innovation Accelerator team.

 


QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:

The candidate must have a degree in business, communications or international development or related areas.

 

Experience:

At least 3 years of progressively responsible national and/or international experience in knowledge management, communications and/or business-related positions. Experience in innovation and change management is beneficial.

 

Knowledge & Skills:

  1. Experience in knowledge management or communication, experience within a global organization a plus.
  2. Strong conceptual thinking to develop new knowledge management and/or communication activities.
  3. Understanding of knowledge management principles and capacity to deliver knowledge management and/or organizational learning activities.
  4. Ability to produce high-quality written materials, including graphically-based PowerPoint presentations as well as text documents.
  5. Experience in creating and designing digital assets such as social media posts, blogs, graphics, audio podcasts and videos, a plus.
  6. Ability to interact with internal stakeholders and external audiences with maturity and tact.
  7. Collaborative spirit able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy.
  8. Strong time management skills with an ability to plan ahead, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles, and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work to tight deadlines.
  9. Self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy.
  10. Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the UN World Food Programme.
  11. Willing to travel to different field locations and challenging operating environments.

 

Languages:

Fluency in written and spoken English required. Intermediate knowledge of another official UN language is beneficial.
