Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women is leading and coordinating the United Nations System to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It is providing strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with the private sector, civil society, government and other relevant actors.

With 10 years to go to the end date of gender inequality in 2030, UN Women is calling for enhanced and sustained actions to deliver on our collective global commitments as they are reflected in Sustainable Development Goal 5 and in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action which celebrates 25 years in 2020. To this end, UN Women established the Generation Equality Campaign and will together with key partners mobilize UN Member States, private sector companies and civil society for accelerated action in the years to come through Action Coalitions.  Under the leadership of the Director of the Nordic Liaison Office, UN Women is looking to recruit a consultant to strengthen partnerships with the private sector in the Nordic countries for improved and accelerated action on gender equality in the context of Generation Equality as well and for longer-term engagement across UN Women’s portfolio.     

Purpose and Objective of the Consultancy

The objective of this consultancy is threefold: (i) to strengthen partnerships with the Nordic private sector by facilitating their engagement in Generation Equality Action Coalitions and to solicit support for UN Women operations both at global and national level: (ii) to build on the MOU between UN Women and FIFA to engage with UEFA in the preparations and implementation of EURO 2020 to promote gender equality and women in sports; and (iii) to mobilize Nordic advertisers in the Unstereotype Alliance.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strengthen partnerships with the Nordic private sector

  1. Review guidelines for engagement of the Private Sector in the Action Coalitions and identify a workplan for the consultancy (which companies to engage with on what and when);
  2. Build on previous private sector engagement in the Nordic countries, and plan and conduct meetings with key private sector companies with the purpose of soliciting their interest in partnerships and identify resource mobilization opportunities through win-win arrangements, including the establishment of a Gender Diversity Roundtable on Inclusive Finance;
  3. Prepare tailor-made documents for meetings with each stakeholder related to a relevant business proposition and partnership models, including background research, development of strategy and approach, and liaise with relevant units in UN Women on shared value of stakeholder partnerships;
  4. Provide technical support to the Gender Diversity Roundtable in Copenhagen and provide technical support to the initiation of the Gender Diversity Roundtable on Inclusive Finance in Norway.

Engage with UEFA in the preparations and implementation of EURO 2020

  1. In collaboration with the Global Sports Programme Coordinator, identify key sports organizations and governing bodies for UEFA 2020, prepare documents and tailor-make input to partnership discussions with special attention to the ability of sports as an enabler of sustainable development and women’s empowerment;
  2. Identify key opportunities to promote SDG5 and the 2030 Agenda as well as resource mobilisation opportunities under UEFA 2020, and draft relevant proposals and documents for partnership engagement.

Mobilize Nordic advertisers and partners for the Nordic Unstereotype Alliance chapter.

  1. Liaise with the Unstereotype Alliance team and support in mobilizing Nordic advertisers and partners for the Unstereotype Alliance chapter including to identify relevant engagement opportunities for the Nordic Liaison Office;
  2. Follow up with potential Unstereotype Alliance Partners in various sectors including the gaming industry and in innovation labs and identify other relevant stakeholders for engagement in the Unstereotype Alliance national chapter and arrange briefing sessions and follow-up;
  3. Develop recruitment, communication and outreach/advocacy strategies to build a robust self-sustaining chapter.

Deliverables:

The consultant is expected to deliver the following outputs: 

  1. Action Coalition guidelines reviewed and design workplan for the consultancy completed and approved (3 days);
  2. Discussions from 2019 with two relevant stakeholders in Denmark followed-up on, and additional meetings for partnership discussions conducted, and relevant background research conducted, and way forward designed in writing. (20 days);
  3. Building on relevant contacts made in 2019, discussions with potential partners in Sweden conducted, with the aim to promote collaboration with Private Sector partners. Meetings conducted to promote value of partnership, relevant background research and strategy documents prepared, outcomes summarised, and relevant way forward identified. (10 days);
  4. Event in Norway in March 2020 prepared and implemented in collaboration with identified partners, and background research, logistical preparation and participation in event conducted (20 days);
  5. Gender Diversity Roundtable completed in Denmark and Norway (12 days);
  6. Collaboration between UN Women and governing sports bodies established for UEFA 2020, relevant background research conducted, largest shared value for engagement identified, meetings conducted, outcomes summarised, and way forward identified (20 days);
  7. Stakeholders for engagement in the Unstereotype Alliance identified, meetings conducted with purpose of mobilizing Nordic advertisers and media actors in the initiative including  relevant background research conducted, approach with largest shared value identified,  outcome summarised, and way forward identified (5 days);
  8. Recruitment, communication and outreach strategies developed for the Unstereotype Alliance Nordic Chapter (10 days).

Required Skills and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Political Science, International Development, Gender Studies or a related field;
  • Experience working for an international organisation and/or government entity with focus on the Sustainable Development Goals, with particular focus on Goal 5;
  • Demonstrated experience working with and advocating on gender issues;
  • Experience in planning and organising complex events;
  • Experience conducting strategies on private sector engagement, with specific focus on resource mobilization and gender equality;
  • Experience in collaborating closely with the private sector, including building and managing partnerships;
  • Demonstrated analytical experience;
  • Excellent rapport in understanding culturally diverse audiences for messaging;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with a minimum of guidance while seeing consensus, and ability to deliver on target and on time;
  • Experience working with the United Nations an advantage.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in the English language required, with strong, confident command of both written and oral English. Fluency in Danish, Norwegian or Swedish required.
