UNICEF has partnered with leading public and private organisations to launch a global partnership dedicated to expanding opportunity for young people, aged 10-24. Generation Unlimited (GenU) is centered on finding new ways to help every young person to get into school, learning, training or employment by 2030 — with a focus on those in the greatest danger of being left behind, including girls, the poorest, those with disabilities, young people on the move and those affected by conflict and natural disasters. Under the direct supervision of the Senior Adviser, Planning and Programmes, the Programme Officer will support the day-to-day work of the Programme Team in Gen U. The position will help to strengthen overall programmatic support to countries, technical initiatives and partnerships with key partners, programmatic and knowledge management initiatives. S/he will also enhance the range and quality of our programme implementation, information management and communications efforts, as well as support to the broader team for various programme meetings and events.

UNICEF has partnered with leading public and private organisations to launch a global partnership dedicated to expanding opportunity for young people, aged 10-24.  Generation Unlimited (GenU) is centered on finding new ways to help every young person to get into school, learning, training or employment by 2030 — with a focus on those in the greatest danger of being left behind, including girls, the poorest, those with disabilities, young people on the move and those affected by conflict and natural disasters.  

GenU brings together leader from governments, UN agencies, the private sector, academia, international and civil society organizations, and young people. The partnership will identify, co-create, resource and scale-up innovative solutions to expand opportunity for young people. Effective programmes will be matched with financing and technical support; investors will find viable solutions to invest in and strong accountability mechanisms that provide adequate assurance of results and fiscal management; and young people will participate meaningfully in the co-creation of solutions, informing, advising and helping implement at every step of the way.

How can you make a difference?

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Adviser, Planning and Programmes, the Programme Officer will support the day-to-day work of the Programme Team in Gen U.  The position will help to strengthen overall programmatic support to countries, technical initiatives and partnerships with key partners, programmatic and knowledge management initiatives. S/he will also enhance the range and quality of our programme implementation, information management and communications efforts, as well as support to the broader team for various programme meetings and events.  

Main Duties/Responsibilities

  • Undertake secondary research and analysis on latest evidence base around GenU priority areas on education, skills training, entrepreneurship, employment and youth engagement at global, regional and national levels to inform programme and technical work.
  • Support knowledge mapping of partners across public and private spheres engaged in GenU priority areas to inform programmatic partnership opportunities from the landscaping analysis to implementation phases
  • Develop and maintain efficient project management tools to monitor, track, and report on progress against planned results.
  • Support Programme Team in the management of up-to-date knowledge management platforms for internal and external audiences.
  • Prepare draft briefing notes, talking points and read outs for various programme and technical activities of the team
  • Provide editorial and communications support on written outputs for internal and external audiences, including presentations and communications materials
  • Prepare quarterly newsletters with infographics showing the progress on Gen U’s work at all levels
  • Support organizational, managerial, and other preparations for events and meetings with partners and within the UN System
  • Collaborate with other teams in -house on programmes, marketing and communications efforts

Expected Results

  • The implementation of GenU business model is supported at country levels in key priority regions.
  • The GenU programme results on key thematic areas are strengthened, including through high quality knowledge products and effective partnerships.
  • Effective knowledge management and communication tools around GenU programme and country implementation are established and utilized towards results.
  • Progress against planned results on GenU is adequately monitored and reported on, and areas for improvement are identified and acted upon.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A university degree in in social science, education, international relations, political science, communications, international development, business administration or other relevant disciplines is required. An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) is considered an asset.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressively professional experience at the national and international levels in programme management, international development, and knowledge management is desired.
  • Strong IT skills and fluency with Microsoft Office Suites, SharePoint, and other programmes is highly desired.
  • Prior experience in the field will be considered a strong asset.
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
