Background

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.

In most cultures, volunteerism is deeply embedded in long-established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UN Volunteers take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities.

In all assignments, UN Volunteers promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UN Volunteers even more rewarding and productive.

Organizational context and brief project description

UNICEF India has launched the UReport platform to amplify the voices of citizens to create positive change in their communities.

U-report is a mobile phone-based technology that provides a forum of opinion and information sharing for children, adolescents and adults. Using a crowd-sourcing approach to initiate a virtual dialogue with the members (‘U-Reporters’) the ultimate aim of the program is to stimulate citizen-led and adolescent/youth-led development. Once the information is collected the data is instantly analyzed. The information is subsequently utilized in advocacy work across all media channels, many UNICEF programs and through partner engagement. UReporters will be engaged via social media and will be asked via weekly polls, quizzes, challenges, to share their ideas, opinions and feedback about issues that matter most to them.  U-Report has evolved into a powerful source of information to improve service delivery and increase youth engagement in policy dialogues with about 300,000 U-Reporters in India (https://india.ureport.in ).  The UReport platform is present in over 30 other countries around the world with more than 7 million U-Reporters globally. (http://ureport.in)

U-Reporters are recruited through partnerships with youth organizations and other civil society organizations. A U-Report Steering Committee / Working group comprising of UNICEF programme teams, government partners, youth organizations and young people will be responsible for planning and supervising the scale up of the UReport platform in India.
