Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Policy Adviser on Peace, Security and Humanitarian Action, the International Volunteer will contribute to the effective implementation of the UN Women Humanitarian 2019/2020 action plan in West and Central Africa which is in line with the organization Humanitarian Strategy. The scope of tasks to be undertaken with regards to gender equality and humanitarian action will be agreed with the incumbent as the need arises, and may cover, but is not limited to

  • Monitor gender dimension into the current crisis in the region and the humanitarian situation, produce a regular informative briefing note and put in place a monitoring data system;
  • Analyze gender integration in existing inter-agency regional and national coordination mechanisms and enhance coherence of the UN system in promoting gender equality concerns in humanitarian response;
  • Substantive participation and support to relevant inter-agency and inter-governmental forums, clusters, inter-agency mechanism;
  • Provide support as needed to ensure that UN humanitarian response is done in a gender-responsive manner, and within agreed regional and international frameworks to promote and protect women in crisis;
  • Follow the implementation of UN Women response in conflict, post-conflict country and produce a regular report, support the finalization of donor report;
  • Provide support to Country Offices in the region towards the implementation of ongoing humanitarian projects
  • Draft/ provide inputs to gender analysis, concept notes, funding proposals and project documents;
  • Contribute to the development/ adaption of tools and training/orientation on gender equality and Humanitarian Action with UN Women Offices, UN Women partners and humanitarian actors;
  • Follow funding Gender as per IASC gender marker and monitor the implementation of action in the country, with support of country office and Humanitarian country team;
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of programme approaches and modalities in line with the UN Women’s Humanitarian Strategy and humanitarian need in the region and at country level;
  • Contribute to fund-raising including the development of new project proposals for use in resource generation at country level and region;
  • Provide technical support to the Lake Chad Basin Commission with the implementation of pillar 9 of their regional strategy
  • Work with Geneva, HQ and WCARO team on the implementation of the DRR funded project funded by Sweden in collaboration with ECOWAS
  • Provide technical support to produce monthly Regional Gender and Humanitarian response newsletter with a support to the communication team and Country humanitarian focal point,
  • Maintain pictures, video database and support the production of knowledge products on emergency in the region to show women and girls situation, produce a regular article with support from the communication team and Country humanitarian focal points,
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of knowledge networks and practices on mainstreaming gender into humanitarian response and recovery contexts.
  • Strengthen communication and knowledge sharing of humanitarian actors in the region
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Advanced University degree in social sciences, law, international relations or another related field, or equivalent

Required experience: 60 Months Experience remark:

At least 5 years of progressive professional experience working on gender and women rights or another related field. Experience in West Africa and particularly the Sahel is required.

Demonstrated interest and/or experience the Humanitarian System and Civil Society Organizations would be an asset Ability to relate humanitarian affairs issues and perspectives particularly and with a focus on gender equality, political, economic, and social and human rights programmes. Excellent research skills required. Knowledge of West and Central Africa’s political, social and human rights issues.
