OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the overall authority of the Director-General and under the supervision of the Assistant Director-General for the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (ADG/IOC), and in the context of the Preparatory Process for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) – from now on referred to as “The Decade” –, the incumbent will assist with conducting outreach and preparatory communications work. Specifically, the incumbent will prepare communications elements to highlight the Ocean Decade Alliance – a group of ocean countries and champions that will help mobilize resources in support of the Decade.

 

The work should take place between 15 January and 15 March, or within two months of the signing of contract between the incumbent and UNESCO.  

 

Key functions:

  • Conduct exploratory assessment of potential countries and institutional stakeholders able to contribute to the objectives of the Decade Alliance, in order to develop potential action stories, and mobilize champions to be featured in communications materials and campaigns related to the Decade Alliance.
  • Source multimedia assets to show case national ocean stories and leaders, which can be used in Decade Alliance communications, including video production and design of brochures.
  • Establish network of communication focal points to help communications planning, product development and dissemination, and the establishment of associated partnerships at the national level.
  • Establish media partnerships to source multimedia materials, develop specific products and disseminate communications in order to raise the visibility of the Decade Alliance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • University degree or Master degree in media/communication studies, public relations or other related social sciences with competence to design and develop communication products and multimedia materials.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience at the international level in public relations, communications or advocacy, preferably in social and ocean issues.

Languages

  • Fluency in English. In addition, knowledge of other UN languages will be a strong asset.
BENEFITS AND ENTITLEMENTS

This is a consultant contract for a duration of 2 months. The appointment is non-career and does not carry any expectancy of renewal or conversion to another contract. Medical health care is not provided.
