(minimum) to 110945 CHF p.a. (maximum).

Introduction

The position of nurse is located in the Medical Service (MEDSERV), which forms part of the Human Resources Development Department (HRD). MEDSERV has a mandate to provide occupational health services to ILO staff and also to assist consultants, delegates and visitors to the ILO HQ building if taken unwell during their visit.


The position of Nurse will report directly to the Medical Advisor and will work alongside another MEDSERV nurse, sharing the same infirmary and similar duties. Each nurse is expected to be professionally accountable and able to work independently.


MEDSERV staff are expected to conform to the opening hours of the unit, from 08:00 to 17:00 on a daily basis. The actual hours for the 80% contract will need to be agreed by the MEDSERV team but will consist of eight sessions of morning or afternoon work during any one week. In case of an unexpected need for urgent nursing cover (for instance due to illness, emergency, etc.) a degree of adaptability to change the usual working hours will be required.


Medical confidentiality is essential to the functioning of MEDSERV. The successful candidate will be required to sign a confidentiality undertaking as part of their contract to work
 

Specific Duties

1. Provide a professional, welcoming and polite service to all users of MEDSERV. Ensure that people in the waiting area of MEDSERV are rapidly triaged and ensure that urgent medical cases are prioritized.


3. Assist in the running of a walk-in clinic for ILO staff and visitors who are unwell in the ILO HQ building. Record basic medical histories and perform routine clinical assessments. Offer appropriate medication from the stock held in the MEDSERV infirmary. Participate as part of the MEDSERV team to help provide immediate first aid and, if indicated, emergency basic life support with cardiac defibrillation.


4. Perform basic clinical screening tests (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration rate, oxygen saturation, blood glucose, urinalysis, pregnancy and malarial tests, electrocardiogram, etc.) whenever clinically indicated or on the request of a doctor. Perform routine and urgent venepuncture.


5. Refer patients as required for further medical care, both in emergency and non-urgent situations. Provide travel briefings for staff members going on official missions abroad, including advice on health-risks and provision of malaria prophylaxis, travel kits and vaccinations.


6. Perform the necessary screening tests for routine medical examinations and ensure that the forms are completed and results available for follow-up consultation with the doctor. Check the vaccination status of staff as part of this routine screen.


7. Provide written health-promotion and disease-prevention information, based on validated academic sources. Assist in the planning and development of health-promotion and disease-prevention seminars, displays and presentations.


8. Keep written records of all patient consultations and maintain the infirmary’s basic statistical databases.


9. Participate in incident and accident reporting and the promotion of accident prevention.


10. Participate in MEDSERV team meetings and in other relevant meetings as required by the supervisor.


11. Participate in professional training in order to maintain and improve an adequate knowledge base, including training in medical emergency scenarios.


12. Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

 

Required qualifications
Education

Completion of secondary education. Nursing degree or diploma with recognized national registration.

Experience

At least ten years of post-registration experience as a nurse, with a variety of different nursing fields. Experience in primary care, travel medicine, occupational health or emergency care would be an advantage. International experience in differing cultures would be an advantage. Experience in the Swiss health system would also be an advantage.

Languages

Excellent command of an official language (English, French, Spanish) of the Organization with a working knowledge of a second official language. One of them must be French. Knowledge of a third official language would be an advantage.

Knowledge and respect of medical confidentiality. Computer skills including the use of Word and Excel
