1.    Organizational Context


 


  1. Organizational Setting

     

    The post is located in the Translation and Terminology Technology Section (TTTS) of the PCT Translation Division.  The role of the Translation and Terminology Technology Section (TTTS) is to enable and support translation and terminology activities on a technical level throughout the Organization; supply and maintain translation and terminology management systems and applications to the three main translation areas; enable coordinated translation and localization activities in other parts of the Organization across the six languages of the UN and ten languages of the PCT; and enable extensive exploitation of neural machine translation by the translation areas.

  2. Purpose Statement

     

    The Senior Translation Technologist is responsible for executing tasks relating to translation technology for all translation areas within the Organization.

     

  3. Reporting Lines

     

    The incumbent works under the supervision of the Head of the Translation and Terminology Technology Section.

     

  4. Work Relations

     

    The incumbent works in collaboration with the Advanced Technology Applications Center.

     

     


2.     Duties and Responsibilities


 


The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:


 


a.  Plan and devise approaches and specifications for the design, introduction and implementation of computer aids to translation, including computer-assisted translation tools, terminology management systems, localization systems and post-editing systems and the use of machine translation systems;


 


b.  Install, upgrade and maintain translation and terminology-related applications, in particular WorldServer, SDL Trados Studio and SDL Multiterm and provide training materials, training and assistance to the users of said applications within the Division, in other translation areas, and externally;


 


c.  Install and support the use of neural machine translation systems, frameworks and their associated corpora, and evaluate the performance of said systems;


 


d.  Liaise and coordinate with IT services and ATAC on the development of such tools and systems and any other translation-related tools or systems that may be adopted by the Organization;


 


e.  Manage external teams engaged in the customization or development of applications and systems used by the Division for translation, translation management, localization, post-editing, or applications used for machine translation;


 


f.   Keep up to date with the latest developments in translation technology in the fields of translation, terminology, and machine translation, and report to the Translation and Terminology Technology Collaboration Board periodically on these topics;


 


g.  Establish links and maintain contact with other organizations and institutions to promote an active exchange of information on the use of translation technology;


 


h.  Perform other related duties as required.


 


 


3.     Requirements


 


Education


Essential


 


Advanced university degree in translation technology or in an equivalent technical field, or advanced university degree in translation including a substantial translation technology component with demonstrated experience and knowledge of the application of information technology to translation.


A first-level university degree in translation with a significant translation technology component or in a technical field such as computing, information technology, mathematics, computational linguistics or similar technical discipline plus two years of relevant professional experience in addition to the years of experience mentioned below may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Essential


At least seven years of relevant professional work experience, including experience in the installation and implementation of translation technology including but not limited to server-based technology such as WorldServer and desktop applications such as SDL Trados Studio. Demonstrated experience in leading projects involving the implementation of computer-assisted translation tools and the research and use of computer-assisted translation tools and machine translation systems.


A candidate with less than seven years but more than four years of relevant experience and holding an advanced university degree will be considered and, subject to being assessed as the best candidate, will be appointed at the P3 grade.  A candidate with less than nine years but more than six years of relevant experience and holding a first-level university degree will be considered and, subject to being assessed as the best candidate, will be appointed at the P3 grade.

Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.


 


Desirable


Good knowledge of another PCT publication language (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish or Russian).


 


Job Related Competencies

A full and up-to-date understanding of translation-related technology such as, translation and terminology management systems, computer-assisted translation tools, post-editing tools and neural machine translation technology.


 


Knowledge of coding in Java, particularly in order to understand and troubleshoot file format issues and be able to understand file structures and WorldServer customizations.


Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

5.      Information


 


Mobility\:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.


 


Annual salary\:


Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  Please note that this estimate is for information only.  The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice.  The figures quoted below are based on the November 2019 rate of 76.7%

Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
