Background

The objective of this assignment is to support youth programming and the implementation of the Youth Leadership Programme and youth-related initiatives at the country level as well as the regional and global level. The Project Assistant will work under the supervision and guidance of the UNDP Bahrain Youth Focal Points, in coordination with the Regional Coordinator. S/he will be an integral part of the UNDP Country office and Regional Programme team and will play an important role supporting UNDP’s Country Offices and partners, with a strong focus on coordination, advocacy, planning, and evaluation. This initiative is part of the Youth Development Delegates Programme in the Arab region and is in partnership with the Arab Youth Center.

The Kingdom of Bahrain played an important role in the development of the 2030 Agenda process and is committed to the achievement of the SDGs. In addition to aligning its national plans, strategic frameworks and policies to the SDGs, the Government of Bahrain has undertaken a series of initiatives to tap into various segments of society, most notably youth, to support the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda.  UNDP works closely with the Government of Bahrain to support its vision of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Vision 2030.

Bahrain has a large youth population, with 47.7% of the total population (Bahrainis and non-Bahrainis) under the age of 29 and 27.2% between the ages of 15 and 29. UNDP will work on accelerating the implementation of pro-youth initiatives and its cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sport Affairs, raising awareness amongst youth of the SDGs, and aligning youth initiatives with the Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly supports the YLP and UNDP Country Office, where relevant and/or youth programming by following up on implementation, coordinating with partners and UNDP Country Offices, accessing regional networks, creating linkages and providing technical support.

  • Contributes to strategic planning, developing innovative responses to emerging challenges and opportunities for youth in Bahrain and the Arab region around SDGs. Identification of areas for support and interventions within thematic areas.

  • Support in capacity building programmes for youth develop and research and development of Programme Strategies.

  • Design of new initiatives and project proposals in the above sectoral areas in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Government Action Plan (2019-2022), UNDP Strategic Plan (2018-2021), UNDP Bahrain Country Programme Document (2017-2020) and relevant projects of UNDP Bahrain.

  • Supports the timely preparation and quality control of all substantive technical reports, briefs and required documents, including progress reports, concept notes, background documents and briefing notes.

  • Works closely with the regional team members and Bahrain CO Youth Team in the development of project activities to promote youth’s social, political and economic empowerment in Bahrain and the Arab region.

  • Facilitates the delivery of YLP activities and other youth-centered initiatives by monitoring results achieved during implementation. S/he ensures and guides the appropriate application of monitoring, reporting and evaluation systems and procedures and develops enhancements if necessary. 

  • Captures stories which reflect on know how (procedures, processes, tactics) and know why (lessons learned, reasons for failures/success). Engages with community-based organizations with a view to allow for greater comprehension and participation on the part of national stakeholders.

  • Coordinates the Youth’s Leadership Programme’s mentorship and capacity building support, where relevant. Conducts an overview and analysis of the relevant partners, donors and stakeholders to the project, and develops a plan for efficient flow of information between them and the project, and vice versa.

  • Develops general tools/guidelines for operative communication measures at regional/national/local levels, for instance press releases, social media, press events, social media and campaigns.

  • Expected to submit report at the end of the year to supervisor and the Regional Coordinator.

  • Carrying out other tasks as assigned by Regional Coordinator in coordination with respective supervisor, and any other required administrative work.

  • Available for long working hours during times of peak work.

  • Proficiency of English and Arabic language is a must

  • Good computer skills in both English and Arabic

  • Strong writing and communication skills; research and data analysis

  • Demonstrated experience in administration, financial recording, and logistics

  • Ability to accommodate and adapt to changing working environment.

  • Systematic and organized, with an ability to be flexible and adaptive.

  • Ability to perform a variety of standard tasks related to screening and collecting of project documentation, projects data entering, preparation of revisions, filing, provision of information, and reporting.

Required Skills and Experience

 

Education:

-B.S. degree in Business Administration, International Relations, Development Studies, Social Development or any other related field.

 

Experience:

 

-At least 2-3 years of relevant work experience.

 

Language Requirements:

 

-Written and oral English and Arabic communication skills.

 

Skills:

 

-Advanced computer skills, including word processing (Word), spreadsheet (Excel) and data management programmes, and ability to quickly learn new applications.

 

Additional requirements:

 

 

-Knowledge of Bahraini Context

-Experience in Youth leadership initiatives at national and/or sub-national level

-Knowledge of SDGs and Agenda 2030 and SDGs Localization

-Knowledge of UNDP work, design thinking and innovation is an asset

-Bahraini Nationals only.
