Job Description

Purpose of the Consultancy

The consultant will be responsible for reviewing various on Basic Literacy and Numeracy curriculum for ]CP/WPE and education in Middle Eastern context. Syrian refugee children need to access BLN activities and to receive learning modules within a structured material, teaching approach and sessions built to encourage a genuine atmosphere of learning for these children.

It is crucial that the consultant will collect, review and finalize the development of modules in the curriculum that addresses the needs of OOSC children taking their situation into consideration, as well as the reality of combining different age groups into the same session. The consultant will need to use structured and creative techniques to convey learning to children who have been out of school for years and in many cases have never attended school. The curriculum will need to include content that is relatable to them and suitable for the environment in which they live in a constructive and empowering way. The need is to develop 3 versions of curriculum to be used within adolescents girls, working children and OOSC will need to be adaptable to shifting schedules and needs of working children, and have modules that are interchangeable if sessions need to be repeated. The curriculum should include SEL exercises with focus on brain games and mindfulness activities. A comprehensive M&E framework should also include adapted tools, assessments and modality of evaluation for each age group.

The consultant hired will need strong skills and background in education including developing content as such curriculum design and interactive sessions which promote creative and invigorating learning techniques. Curriculum modules will need to be in both Arabic, French and English, including modules on numeracy (specifically for WPE and CP). The consultant will need to conduct field consultation with Tripoli, Beqaa and Mount Lebanon areas to conduct education assessments with the teachers and children if needed for piloting one of the sessions once curriculum is finalized. He/she will also have a set of agreed meetings with senior officers and managers of the program.

Proposed Outputs and Key Tasks

  • Meetings and close coordination with Child Protection, WPE & Education teams to understand challenges faced when working with OOSC, adolescents girls and street and workingchildren ( WPE: 14-18 years, CP and Education : 10 to 14, review existing education and child protection sessions and agree on the key components and approach/methodology of the curriculum development.
  • Content should include examples of interactive and creative learning approaches that will be used to support children’s learning.
  • Pilot examples of the sessions with the children or accompany the team in some pilot sessions and give feedback; Include feedback and revisions into sessions and finalize sessions agreed upon as a priority for the program using the same approach adopted in approved sessions.
  • Develop related SOPs defining the 3 curriculum versions, with a practical table on all modules, linked assessment tools and relevant training for teachers.
  • Develop a 2 days training (WPE,CP and Education) to enable teachers and facilitators to deliver selected BLN curriculum version.
  • Share final draft for review and include revisions
  • Final output: Tailored Basic Literacy and Numeracy Curriculum in Arabic, French and English version with the handout document as well and related M&E tools; M&E tools accompanying the curriculum are also required.
  • The Consultant will need to have strong skills in creativity, and use child friendly approaches and language throughout the curriculum.

  • Start date: Beginning of January 2020 till mid of February 2020.

Beirut (Mount Lebanon, North and Beqaa) and home based.

Qualifications

Education: Education related field, CP and integrated education programs. BLN and curriculum development proven skills and teacher’s professional development experience.

Master’s in Education or equivalent number of years of experience

Payment method:

  • Payment per deliverables, based on pre-set deadlines.

Work Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in develop educational material for children including basic literacy material for children and youths in the Middle East and or related contexts.
  • Experience in developing education content for underprivileged children.
  • Experience in using creative and innovative teaching methods in previous consultancies or roles.
  • Teaching experience with children in challenging contexts in Arab countries.
  • Proficient in Arabic, French and fluent in English language: both spoken and written
  • Strong understanding of educational content in Lebanon.
  • Experience with educational materials development and /or design (specifically for Syrian children/child population).
