Job Description

The Interpreter Services Coordinator oversees the delivery of high quality, reliable language interpretation and interpreter training that facilitates access to health, education, government, legal and community services for limited English proficient (LEP) clients at the International Rescue Committee offices located in Silver Spring and Baltimore, Maryland.

This position is based out of the Baltimore and Silver Spring offices, with time split between both (approximately 2 days in one office, and 3 days in the other per week).

Responsibilities:

Recruitment, Training, and Oversight of Interpreters

  • Recruit, assess, orient, and train bilingual speakers as community interpreters through advertisements and networking with community partners and organizations.
  • Conduct on-going coaching, training and assessment of interpreters focused on ethics, accuracy, impartiality, professionalism, confidentiality, attitude, special terminology, customer service, and other topics.
  • Ensure that interpreters adhere to national standards of interpreter ethics.

Interpreter Services Development and Operations

  • Manage computerized scheduling and billing system.
  • Assign appropriate interpreters, taking into consideration interpreter’s availability, training, experience, past performance, and familiarity with client’s needs.
  • Reconcile interpreter assignments with client encounter information for invoicing.
  • Work with IRC management and financial staff to coordinate the efficient billing of clients and the timely payment of interpreters.
  • Ensure excellent customer service.
  • Prepare reports as needed by IRC management.
  • Undertake other related duties as assigned by IRC management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field strongly preferred.
  • At least two years of experience managing a language/interpreter service or similar customer service program that includes working with customers/clients, coordinating a complex appointment schedule and managing staff/contractors.
  • Two to three years of experience serving as an interpreter in healthcare, education, legal and/or community settings preferred.
  • Experience supervising a culturally diverse team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong computer literacy skills in MS Windows and Office applications.
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage time effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work as a team member in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Strong customer service skills and entrepreneurial approach to program management.
  • Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.
