Job Description

BACKGROUND

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Logistics Specialist prepares for the arrival of new refugees by assuring safe, sanitary, and furnished housing is secured for each client. The Casework team provides services post-arrival to orient refugees and asylees to their life in the US by linking each client to both internal and public services available to them.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with maintaining physical and electronic client case files
  • Assist in the field with furnishing new homes and transporting donations as needed
    Assist with tracking and valuing donations
  • Assist clients with various appointments and applications in the field and at the office
  • Other related duties as assigned

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Intern will gain experience managing physical and electronic filing systems
  • Intern will learn how housing is secured and prepared for newly arriving refugees
  • Intern will acquire knowledge of programs and public benefits available for refugees and asylees during their case management period
  • Intern will gain US field office experience interacting with refugees and asylees
  • Intern will learn reporting requirements for resettlement agencies and how capturing this data improves services

Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 hours per week. 20+ hours per week preferred for a period of 3 months.
  • Organized with utmost attention to detail
  • Computer literate with the ability to learn new software and tasks
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to navigate the service area with clients via public transportation or vehicle
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience or interest working with refugee and humanitarian issues
  • Able and willing to lift and carry up to approximately 50 pounds (E.g., carrying half of a couch during apartment setup) is preferred, but not required
  • A car or access to a car is preferred, but not required
  • Fluency in one of the following languages is preferred, but not required: Arabic, Dari, Spanish, Swahili, Urdu

We currently offer internships during the following semesters: 
Spring: January – May
Summer: May – August
Fall: September – December

Internships are typically posted 2-3 months prior to the anticipated start date.  

This position is for spring 2020 and requires a minimum commitment of 3 months and at least 15-20 hours per week.

Note: This is an unpaid internship; school credit may be received depending on your program and institution. 

*Candidates applying not currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or not within 12 months of graduation will be processed as volunteers.

To protect our clients, the IRC requires all selected applicants to complete background checks. We ask that you make a $30 donation to help us cover the associated costs. Currently, 92% of our funding goes directly to programming to support our clients, and your help to cover this cost will ensure that no funding is directed away from serving our clients. Instructions will be provided after you have been selected to intern or volunteer.
