OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences, and under the direct supervision of the Chief of the section on Earth Sciences and Geo-Hazard Risk Reduction, the Assistant Project Officer shall contribute to the development, management and implementation of activities in the field of earth sciences and disaster risk reduction (DRR) within the overall commitment of UNESCO towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. In particular, s/he will be expected to assist to provide technical and coordinative support to the Programme Specialists working on the activities related to an extra-budgetary project from funded by EU’s Director-General for Research and Innovation:

OPERANDUM: Open-air laboratories for Nature based solutions (NBS) to manage environmental risks. The objective of OPERANDUM is to reduce multi-hazard hydro-meteorological risks through co-designed, co-developed, deployed, tested and demonstrated innovative green and blue/grey/hybrid nature-based solutions. (EU Horizon 2020 project 2018-2021).

Long Description

The incumbent shall in particular be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Collect and analyse lessons learnt from each Open-Air Laboratory on NBS solutions and assist in preparation of thematic training materials;
  • Assist in the needs assessment of stakeholders and in the content collection from OPERANDUM partners for a development of a series of lectures and workshops on NBS for DRR for practitioners and academic students;
  • Assist in the organisation of high-level outreach events, including side events during UN conferences and information sessions for International thematic days;
  • Assist in facilitation of knowledge exchange and training, including on risk perception and human behaviour so that the major global and national stakeholders (including communities, experts and international and national policy-makers) will further act on the nature based solutions and resilience;
  • Provide logistical support for the preparation and implementation of UNESCO tasks with a particular focus on strengthening resilience and risk perception.

Additionally, the incumbent will offer her/his support in the following items:

  • Attend programme related meetings and prepare minutes as required;
  • Assist in organizing international and national workshops and conferences;
  • Perform any other duties as need arises.

During the assignment period, the Assistant  Project officer shall work full-time at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

EDUCATION

  • Completed secondary, technical and/or vocational school.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience at national or international level.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Good analytical, organizational and project management skills in natural hazards and disaster risk reduction;
  • Excellent coordination and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with various stakeholders  within and outside the organization;
  • Ability to work effectively maintain effective working relations within a multi-cultural environment;
  • Ability to manage heavy workloads and to meet tight deadlines, paying close attention to detail;
  • Solid IT skills including knowledge of office software.

LANGUAGES 

  • Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken).
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Training or certificate in the field of social sciences, natural or environmental sciences.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in maintaining professional networks;
  • Experience in the field of disaster risk reduction within international organisations.

LANGUAGES 

  • Good knowledge of another UNESCO language.
