The UN Alliance of Civilizations seeks to reduce tensions across cultural divides that threaten to inflame existing political conflicts or trigger new ones. Through preventive diplomacy initiatives, it works at grassroots level, promoting education, youth, media and migration projects aimed at building trust and respect among diverse communities. The Alliance was established in 2005, at the initiative of the Governments of Spain and Turkey, under the auspices of the United Nations. UNAOC is supported by a Group of Friends – a community of over 150-member states, international organizations and bodies.The UNAOC Secretariat, based in New York, USA, is funded by multiple donors, with

operations-level support provided by UNOPS.

Functional Responsibilities

Under the coordination of the Program Management Coordinator and the direct supervision of the senior advisors for the UNAOC High Representative, the Programme Manamgent Specialist – Gender duties will include:

Project Design and Implementation: 

  • Contribute to the design of a strategy for the newly added area of work on women as peace mediators
  • Implement and coordinate all project activities in the area of Gender; whenever possible, incorporate a consultation process with stakeholders and partners from different regions;
  • While implementing projects in the area of Gender, manage creation and maintenance of databases; if applicable, coordinate the process of selecting jury members and liaison with them; long-listing and short-listing of candidates; outreach to project participants and alumni, including providing technical support and expertise;
  • Act as the main focal point and expert on Gender issues in the UNAOC team;
  • Support to the development of partnerships with relevant UN entities, national parliaments and  UNAOC partners in relevance to their work on women empowerment in parliaments.
  • Engage in the development and expansion of Gender-related partnerships with research bodies, think-tanks, civil society groups and universities to build and expand on content areas;
  • Responsible for monitoring financial aspects of all Gender projects, including keeping progress report of budget execution and drafting reports to the donors; consult relevant UNAOC Administrative personnel.
  • Provide support to all logistics needed for project activities in the Gender area, while consulting and working closely with the UNAOC Administrative personnel. 
  • Draft TORs for services and liaise with vendors as needed including collecting vendor forms.
  • Maintain records, file and organize documents regarding project operations.
  • Ensure use of best practices in the monitoring and assessment of all UNAOC projects in the area of Gender.
  • Participate in the design of new project proposals, consult relevant UNAOC personnel in drafting final project proposals. Obtain an approval of the UNAOC senior management of the project proposals and liaise with the donor representatives. Follow up on the decisions made and inform the relevant UNAOC personnel of the outcome of consultations with donors.

Advocacy and Communications Support:

  • Represent UNAOC at and participate in inter-agency networks related to Gender issues;
  • Promote the visibility of the org work on gender through media outreach in coordination with the UNAOC Communications personnel;
  • Assist the UNAOC Communications personnel in monitoring and tracking stories about achievements of organizations or individuals supported by UNAOC in the area of Gender; support and provide input to produce communication materials pertaining to assigned project activities;

During the UNAOC Global Forums or other events, provide substantive and logistical support to programme components covering Gender pillar of UNAOC.

Contribute and provide input to the overall work of the UNAOC Secretariat and Cabinet of the High Representative, and take on additional tasks as and when needed.

Monitoring and Progress Controls:

  • Performance Evaluation Report (PER) feedback from direct supervisor.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:
  • Master’s Degree is required

  • Bachelor degree plus additional years of relevant experience may substitute the requirement of Master’s degree

Experience:
  •  Minimum five (5) years of relevant work experience in project support or management;
  • Experience with international organizations or international non-governmental organizations will be considered an asset;
  • Proven knowledge of international relations, particularly matters related to the United Nations, and intercultural issues, including trends in the fields of cross-cultural dialogue and development is desired;
  • Experience with gender legislations in regional and national parliaments will be an asset. 
  • Excellent knowledge of Gender issues in an international context required;
  • Experience with research, analysis and drafting of documents on complex issues will be considered an asset;
Language:
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English; working knowledge of another UN language is an asset;
  • IT proficiency.
