Organizational Setting

The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

The position is located in the FAO Representation in Kenya

Reporting Lines

Within the framework of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Disease Operations (ECTAD), the incumbent will work under the functional and administrative supervision of the FAO Representative in Kenya, and the direct supervision of the ECTAD Country Team Leader in Kenya and in collaboration with the ECTAD Kenya team.

Strength capacities for advancing One Health in Kenya
Tasks and responsibilities
  • Provide technical support and work closely with the Zoonotic Disease Unit (ZDU) to strengthen and operationalize One Health platforms in Kenya

  • Support the establishment, strengthening and operationalization of OH platforms at national and sub-national levels, in coordination with the Zoonotic Disease Unit (ZDU) as well as other national and subnational stakeholders

  • Support launch and implementation of national preparedness and response plans for priority zoonotic diseases through the One Health approach in consultation with the Ministries in charge of human health, animal health and environment as well as ZDU

  • Actively participate in the development of One Health advocacy and communication materials through including One Health success stories and best practices

  • Perform other related duties as required
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
  • Advanced university degree in Veterinary Medicine/Sciences and/or other related fields

  • 5 years of relevant experience in animal health.
  • Working knowledge of English

  • Structuring and drafting skills to make information accessible and meaningful to expected users.

  • Effective written, oral and presentation skills, particularly ability to present information in a concise, logical and accurate manner; ability to develop consensus among people with varying points of view.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national, regional and socio-cultural backgrounds with respect for diversity.

  • Good judgment and initiative, imagination and resourcefulness, energy and tact, ability to ensure an effective work structure to maximize productivity and achieve institution’s goals.

  • Evidence of previous publications in refereed journals
