Assistant Environment Affairs Officer

Description of task

Under the direct supervision UNSOS Environment Affairs Officer, the UNV volunteer will be responsible for the following:

  • Support the Environment Affairs Officer in implementing the above detailed mandate (see number 8);
  • Conducting environmental baseline studies;
  • Conducting environmental inspection of waste and energy facilities in both USOS and AMISOM camps;
  • Provide training to the troops and civilian personnel on environmental protection measures especially water and waste management;
  • Carrying out awareness raising to all the mission personnel and clients on environmental responsible sound behaviour to protect the host-country’s environment from degradation.
  • monitor compliance of the mission’s activities with the UN Environmental policies, with a specific focus on energy consumption/use of fossil fuel, and other sustainability-related areas. In this regard the UNV, will assist in collecting and inputting data for reporting on the Mission’s Environment Action Plan (MEAP);
  • Assist in proposing feasible solutions for the reduction of the environmental footprint of the mission (emission towards air, water and soil, energy and water consumption, resource use minimization, environmental liability related to contaminated areas etc.), and monitor the implementation of the proposed solutions, while assisting with monitoring and reporting on the mission environmental initiatives and energy conservation measures;
  • Advising on equipment needs (e.g. energy saving appliances, water saving devices, renewable energy generation etc.) to improve the environmental stewardship of the mission, including development of respective equipment specifications and/or scope-of-works;
  • support in drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) aimed at preserving and saving natural resources by using them more efficiently and seeking compliance with Organizational policies;
  • support in development and implementation of a sustainability and pollution prevention program in conjunction with Mission initiatives, and review the plan including recommendations for improvement when the needs arise;
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

A first degree in environmental sciences, public health with specialty in industrial chemistry is essential. Additional qualification in energy, waste or sanitary engineering. He or she should have sound technical and operational knowledge of sustainability solutions, preferably including in developing countries (e.g. water and energy saving techniques, waste reduction strategies etc.).

Required experience: 60 Months Experience remark:

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience undertaking operational wastes disposal, environmental remediation, energy audit and training.

Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
Area of expertise: Sustainable natural resources management and climate change adaptation, Energy sector Area of expertise details:
  1. Skills:
    • Sound security awareness.
    • Good communications skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical staff at all levels in a clear and concise style;
  • Have affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
