Background

BACKGROUND

Bringing together Member States, civil society and private sector, the Global Alliance for Reporting Progress on Promoting Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies harnesses the strengths and resources of its members in order to support effective and meaningful reporting on the achievement of SDG16, taking into account different national realities, capacities and levels of development and respecting national policies and priorities. 

Chaired by the UK, co-led by 7 Member States, 3 civil society organizations and 3 private sector entities and co-facilitated by 7 UN agencies the Global  Alliance  brings  UN  Member  States  the  assistance  they  need  to  report  meaningfully  on progress  towards  peaceful,  just,  and  inclusive  societies —and  its  links  to  the  entire  2030  Agenda  for Sustainable Development.

Duties and Responsibilities

SCOPE OF WORK

The intern will work under the supervision of the UNDP Advisor on SDG 16 and closely with the Global Alliance Coordinator and other members of the Global Alliance Secretariat to support the work on SDG16 and the outreach of the SDG16+ Report “Enabling the implementation of the 2030 Agenda through SDG 16+: Anchoring peace, justice and inclusion”. This involves supporting the development of high-quality communication material and social media messaging on the SDG16+ as part of a coherent and high-impact SDG 16+ campaign, assisting with coordination meetings with other SDG 16+ initiatives and other coordination work related to the Global Alliance and SDG16+. The intern will furthermore be expected to assist in conducting secondary research on SDG16 to be used in UNDP strategies and programming on governance.

Tasks will include, but not be limited to:

  • Assist with the launch and organization of Global Alliance’s SDG16 implementation campaign, including consultations on the SDG16+ implementation and its outreach, including drafting concept notes, agendas, speakers’ guidance notes and participants list’s.
  • Managing and creating content for the Global Alliance social media channels, as well as drafting blogposts/op-eds on SDG16 data and reporting on behalf of the Global Alliance.
  • Facilitate and develop coordinated advocacy messages for SDG 16+ with Global Alliance partners.
  • Conduct high-quality secondary research and literature review on SDG16+ to input the development of UNDP strategic and programmatic documents on governance.
  • Support the organisation of Global Alliance and other SDG16+ events – namely technical workshops and coordination meetings by preparing communications to participants, undertaking logistics and drafting minutes/summary reports of meetings etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and structure information with superior analytical and research skills.   
  • Demonstrated competency and experience in carrying out advocacy and interfacing with multiple constituencies. Ability to write and communicate in a clear and concise manner, with experience in writing briefing notes, talking points and concept notes for senior staff preferred.  
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure in a fast-paced international environment, preferably in a UN organization.
  • Experience in communications and social media management preferred.

  • Promotes the vision, mission, and strategic goals of UNDP, and partner organizations:

Required Skills and Experience

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Education:

Enrolment in bachelor’s or higher Degree in Social Sciences, Human Rights, Development Studies, Political Science, International Relations or related field.

Professional Experience:

  • Strong external relations management experience, including experience managing multi-stakeholder partnerships and experience engaging with government in the context of policy dialogue and policy advocacy efforts preferred.
  • Experience working with UNDP or within the UN system, particularly on governance, partnerships and intergovernmental relations preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the work of the Global Alliance, SDG16 and the 2030 Agenda would be a strong asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in English, both written and oral;
  • Additional languages advantageous

INSTITUTIONAL ARRANGEMENT / REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS   

The UNDP Advisor for SDG 16 will provide overall supervision of the internship.

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) - in a development-related field such as international relations, international law, sociology, public administration, public policy and public relations.
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); - in a development-related field such as international relations, international law, sociology, public administration, public policy and public relations.
  • Have graduated (A development-related field such as international relations, international law, sociology, public administration, public policy and public relations) with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. UNDP will not reimburse the medical insurance of the intern. Any costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern.

Applicants for internships must show proof of valid medical insurance for the duty station in which they will intern. For applicants which are neither nationals nor residents of the duty station, the insurance must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship duration which:

  • Requires transportation to the home country or country of residence for further treatment;
  • Results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the home country, or country of residence.

There is no expectation of employment with UNDP following an internship.
