The Internship Programme is a learning opportunity aimed at attracting young and talented candidates/students. The programme will provide selected candidates/students with the opportunity to supplement their academic knowledge with a practical work assignment in a field related to the work of WFP. This will promote better understanding of WFP mandate and programmes. Similarly, the programme will provide WFP with qualified individuals specializing in relevant fields in line with WFP’s Strategic Objectives and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

WFP Kenya activities in Dadaab include General Food Distribution, school feeding, safety nets, nutrition and food assistance for assets creation through provision of in-kind and cash-based transfers. The intern will work with the Programme team under the direct supervision of the Programme Policy Officer and overall supervision of the Area Coordinator.

This position is open to qualified Kenyan nationals of Somali descent only. Qualified female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking to fill an internship position in our Dadaab.

The Internship will be for a fixed period of 8 months.  

ELIGIBILITY FOR INTERNSHIP

To be considered for this internship, applicants must meet one of the three criterias listed in a to c below in addition to fully meeting d,e and f;

a. Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate programme (for example, Bachelor’s degree) from a recognised university and have completed at least two years of the programme. Candidates should have attended classes in the past 12 months;

b. Be currently enrolled in a graduate programme (for example, Master degree) from a recognised university and have attended classes in the past 12 months;

c. Be a recent graduate from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognised university and have attended classes in the last 12 months of enrolment in the university.

d. Be fluent in English. Fluency in other WFP official and working languages is always an asset and may be an additional requirement at some duty stations;

e. Be fit to travel to, and work at, the duty station of the internship;

f. Not be sons, daughters, brothers or sisters of WFP employees;

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Provide support in monitoring of WFP programmes including:

  • Support the programme team in reviewing monthly Cooperating Partners (CP) reports and capturing them in our SAP (COMET);
  • Assist in processing data reconciliation in the SAP (COMET) with LESS;
  • Conduct field missions to WFP activities sites to monitor the implementation programme, the management and use of food/ cash assistance, the targeting and the respect of WFP principles by the CPs;
  • Contribute to monitoring reports on any WFP programme related issues on the field, including food management on the field, beneficiaries’ problems and conduct of CPs in line with WFP guidelines;
  • Contribute in monthly consolidated beneficiaries and achievement reports;
  • Assist in receiving and registering invoices and Cooperating Partners reports for tracking purposes;
  • Provide weekly status updates on CP invoices received, registered and processed for payment;
  • Take minutes in various programme meetings;
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records and files within the area of work;
  • Perform any other duties as required.
DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge (academic or practical) in any of the following areas is desirable: food security, project management, agriculture, nutrition, and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Basic computer skills and use of Microsoft Office packages such as word and excel are essential.

Language :

  • Working knowledge of English and Somali is a requirement.

 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
  • Upon selection, proof of enrolment in a course of study will be required and your expected date of graduation. If you have graduated, a certified copy of your degree will be required.
  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
