The UNICEF Office to the AU& ECA was established to lead, facilitate and coordinate UNICEF’s engagement with the African Union and its Organs so that child rights issues remain high in the AU agenda.

UNICEF recently developed an engagement strategy with the African Union (AU) which overall objective is to contribute to positioning and advancing the rights of children and young people in its work, with a focus on consolidating results achieved and accelerating progress for children and young people. The AU-UNICEF cooperation framework sets four (4) main objectives being operationalized in a 2-year work plan 2019-2020:

  1. Accelerating children’s rights and protection on the continent;
  2. Catalysing young people’s development in Africa;
  3. Protecting children and young people in fragile and humanitarian contexts;
  4. Strengthening partnerships to deliver results for children.

How can you make a difference?

The position supports UNICEF AU&ECA Office engagement with the AU towards strengthening protection mechanisms of children and young people in fragile and humanitarian contexts.

Under the supervision of the Representative, the Humanitarian Child Protection Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Monitors, analyzes and reports on AU engagement in humanitarian fronts (migrations, disasters relief, post-electoral conflicts and armed conflicts) in the continent.
  • Provides support and technical assistance to the relevant AUC Divisions involve in humanitarian actions to ensure that Child protection dimensions are appropriately integrated in responses programs and decisions.
  • In consultation with UNICEF Emergencies Technical teams and Child Protection Advisors, provides inputs to AU policy and program documents related to humanitarian and peace building;
    Act as focal point for the following specific advocacy initiatives: Children Affected by Armed Conflicts (CAAC), Children on the Move (CoM), Silencing the Guns. In that regard, monitors, reports and coordinates UNICEF engagements with the AUC and other UN Agencies in these initiatives.
  • Contributes to preparing concept and briefing notes, speeches for high-level events related to humanitarian and peace and security. This includes, AU Summits, STC, Technical meetings, RCM meetings, AU-UNICEF top leadership meetings etc…
  • Prepares or contributes to the preparation of various written reports, documents and communications, e.g. drafts sections of studies, background papers, policy guidelines, parliamentary documents, briefings, case studies, presentations, correspondence, etc.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Advanced university Degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Humanitarian Law, International Development, Economic or related social science field, or relevant first-level university degree (Bachelor's) in conjunction with a valid relevant professional certification is required.
    A minimum of two years of professional experience mainly in preparedness and/or humanitarian action is required.
  • Understanding of development and humanitarian work.
  • Emergency experience an advantage.
  • Familiarity with the AU or any other Regional political institution is a considerable advantage
  • Fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or local language of the duty station is considered as an asset.
