OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the overall authority of the Chief of Section for Media Development and Society (CI/FEM/MAS) and the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist responsible for UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy (MIL) programme, the Individual Specialist shall:

 

(1) Assist with the overall coordination of the MIL component of the Multi-Donor Programme for Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists;
(2) Prepare news items, reports, synthesis notes, and briefings related to ongoing and future MIL projects, activities and events; carry out relevant desk research;
(3) Assist with the organization and promotion of Global MIL Week 2020 (24-31 October 2020) and its feature events in South Korea; liaise with speakers, participants, and partners; aid preparation of the Feature Conference agenda; organize logistics; and mobilize local celebration events around the world;
(4) Contribute to the coordination of regional consultative meetings concerning the updating of UNESCO’s model MIL Curriculum for Teachers, planned to be carried out in 2020 in Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional/Cluster Offices;
(5) Provide technical support to the updating of UNESCO’s MIL-related web pages; review the current structure, content and statistics, prepare a systematic plan for updating, and produce relevant new content; contribute to building a dedicated website showcasing the impact of UNESCO’s work on MIL;
(6) Undertake any other tasks assigned by the Chief of Section.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in communications, media studies, international development, or relevant fields.


Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in communications, event organization, and research.
  • Experience with UNESCO and/or the United Nations system and understanding of their functioning and procedures.


Language skills
Excellent knowledge (written and oral) of English or French and good working knowledge of the other language.

 

Competencies and skills

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and drafting skills.
  • Good data analysis, background research, and project management skills.
  • Knowledge in finances, accounting and programming.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills, including the ability to organize own work priorities and deadlines. Discretion and maturity of judgement are required. 
  • Ability to work under pressure. 
  • Solid computer skills including advanced knowledge of Word, Excel, EMS Office, and Stata.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Good knowledge of another UNESCO official language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish).
