Industrial Design and Manufacturing Consultant, Afghanistan

ACDI/VOCA is seeking an Industrial Design and Manufacturing Consultant for the AVC-HVC project in Afghanistan. The AVC-HVC project works with anchor firms nationwide to reverse market failures, strengthen backward and forward linkages, drive growth, and create jobs for men, women, and youth along the fruit and nuts, high-value horticulture, spices, and medicinal crops value chains. The Project contributes positive and measurable impacts to the sectors and will ensure that local market actors are involved at every stage of the value chain. In 2019, the AVC-HVC project launched the Young Innovators in Agriculture Competition. The program included a boot camp on post-harvest technologies, and entrepreneurship, followed by five regional competitions in which students of the Agriculture and Veterinary Institutes (AVI) produced prototypes of technological innovations to reduce post-harvest losses in high-value crops. The team representing Herat province won the first prize with a system (composed of two modules) to clean and dry saffron. The prototype called the attention of the industry, as it addresses an existing gap. However, the prototypes are rudimentary and require adjustments before they can be patented and mass produced.

The Industrial Design and Manufacturing Consultant will work closely with the AVI team, winner of the first prize, and with a local metal shop in Herat province. The purpose is to improve the design, produce technical drawings and specifications to patent the design, and produce a replicable and marketable prototype. The expected timeframe for the assignment is between March 1-30, 2020 for 23 days of work in country, based out of Kabul and Herat.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the prototype and propose improvements
  • Produce the technical drawings and technical specifications
  • Advise the students, together with project staff on how to patent the design
  • Produce an improved prototype, working closely with a local metal shop, using food grade stainless steel and good manufacturing practices
  • Produce a cost estimate, production plan and business plan for the students
  • Assist the students in the selection of an appropriate business model (selling the patent, partnering with a manufacturer, or engaging in the production and distribution)

Qualifications

  • Practical experience in design and manufacturing of food processing equipment
  • Hands-on attitude and willingness to mentor students and artisans
  • Passion for entrepreneurship
  • Degree in industrial engineering desirable, though not indispensable
  • Experience working in multicultural environments
  • Willingness to travel to Herat province
