Job Description

IRC Background: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading non-sectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The IRC in Northern California serves over 1000 newly arriving refugees annually providing them a fresh start and opportunities to use their greatest resources—their motivation, their skills and their experiences—to become independent and self-sufficient new Americans.  

Job Overview: The Adult Education AmeriCorps is responsible for supporting the provision of classroom instruction including English as other language, job readiness orientations and vocational training services, know your rights, cultural orientation, and topics around health and wellness to improve client capacity to adjust to life in America successfully. Classes vary in size and are held in office and out in the community. This position will report to program leads.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and lead curriculum in classroom settings under the supervision of IRC office leads.

  • As appropriate, expand upon existing curriculum.

  • Assist in additional training opportunities such as mock interviews, creation of resumes, and job skills development sessions.

  • Assist clients directly by filling out job applications and assisting with the interview process, as appropriate. 

  • Keep accurate attendance records and client pre- and post-assessments.

  • Track client progress in client database.

  • Comply with all policies, procedures and protocols of the agency.

  • Participate in all program meetings, staff development activities.

Qualifications

  • Training or experience in adult education, workforce development or TESOL is preferred.

  • Experience working with external partners and volunteers to accomplish tasks/goals.

  • Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English. Bilingual ability in one of the predominant languages of the local client base is desired.

  • Experience working in a multicultural environment desirable.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

  • Must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident and authorized to work in the U.S.

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Must have a high school diploma (undergraduate degree strongly preferred)
