Communications Assistant, Spotlight Initiative

Eligibility criteria

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Programme Coordinator or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Communications Assistant will be required to:

  1. Support planning, and implementation of the Spotlight Initiative and its communication and visibility strategies and plans
  • Support the development and implementation of comprehensive and realistic communication and visibility plans and strategies, supporting the assurance of a gender perspective;
  • Support the development of high impact communications’ products (e.g. web, electronic, etc.);
  • Coordinate the implementation of visibility, communications, and outreach activities with recipient UN agencies;
  • Ensure wide dissemination and visibility of programme results;
  • Compile success stories and programme achievements and manage knowledge sharing among recipient UN agencies;
  • Support the tracking of progress against established communications work plans and outputs;
  • Write and/or disseminate press releases, policy briefs, pamphlets, talking points, speeches, editorials, branded materials, and other written communications materials;
  • Support communications and advocacy activities for joint national campaigns, launching initiatives, and publications;
  • Support the coordination and management of relationships with members of the media;
  • Design, maintain and monitor a digital presence, including robust social media analysis for the Spotlight Initiative.
  1. Collaborate with and provide support to the UN Communications Group (UNCG), related to Spotlight
  • Support the planning and events management role of the UN Communications Group (UNCG) for Spotlight and its related communication needs
  • Provide miscellaneous communications, graphic and written resource, advocacy, and coordination support to the UNCG communications team;
  1. Provide administrative and logistical support as necessary.
  • Support preparation and organization of meetings, workshops and events related to Spotlight;
  • Follow up on deadlines, commitments and decisions made, actions taken and coordination of the collection and submission of the reports to Spotlight Secretariat;
  • Engage directly and pro-actively with operational counterparts in other UN agencies on matters relating to the implementation of communications and visibility actions.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments: Required experience: 24 Months Experience remark:
  • At least two years progressively responsible professional experience in communications, strategy, print, broadcast, graphics and/or media and social media.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience working on gender equality and human rights, especially in the area of Eliminating Violence Against Women is an asset.
  • Experience in communications with one or more of the UN Agencies in Jamaica is an asset.
  • Proficiency in design, photography, videography, social media campaigns, or other similar skills are an asset.
  • Training/Practical experience in editing, writing and their associated processing software is an advantage.
  • Computer literate, with proficiency in office software packages, experience in handling of web-based management and knowledge-management systems.
Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
Area of expertise: Other communications related experience Area of expertise details:
