Job Description

Under the supervision of the Resettlement Supervisor, the Caseworker will support the social well-being and economic self-sufficiency of refugees arriving from Nauru and Papua New Guinea (NRPP) by assessing clients’ needs, assisting in the development and implementation of service plans, recommending and obtaining services, and gathering information necessary to assist clients in obtaining services appropriate to their identified needs.

Major Responsibilities:
Pre-Arrival Client Services:

  • Ensure a positive resettlement experience for newly arrived refugees, from pre-arrival preparations and point of entry to successful integration. This may include assurance that appropriate pre-arrival services are in place (locating and securing suitable housing, purchasing housing essentials, furniture and basic food supplies, setting up utilities etc.);

    Post Arrival Client Services:
  • Provide extended comprehensive case management services to clients that require additional assistance while ensuring a positive resettlement experience;
  • Support clients with housing transitions, challenges, and crises, including landlord mediation and emergency financial assistance;
  • Connect clients to resources available in-house or in the community; identify new resources and/or partners that offer support, ease transition, and facilitate successful integration;
  • Provide individualized and group orientations while supporting clients through social service referrals, medical access, and advocacy services through robust assessment and evaluation of each client’s distinct needs;
  • Independently develop reasonable resettlement and/or self-sufficiency plans and timelines for each client and guide client expectations;
  • Ensure clients are provided timely basic tools necessary to meet their established short-term goals and objectives;
  • Assess and monitor client progress at regular intervals to ensure progress on goals is made, designated resources are maximized, and modify initial resettlement plans and other case file documents as required;
  • Regular travel, including nights and weekends, throughout service delivery area (home visits, agency visits, service provider visits, airport pick-ups, etc.) will be required;
  • Assist clients in other geographic locations when requested, assess their needs and provide available assistance;

Compliance Documentation:

  • Ensure strict compliance with case file management and reporting requirements, including timely data entry in hard-copy files and databases; maintain confidentiality of client information;

Team/Office Participation:

  • Participate in all program meetings, staff development activities, and fully engage as a contributing member of the team;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree preferred, ideally in Social Work or an equivalent field of study. Comparable related work experience may be substituted;

  • Minimum of 1 year relevant work experience in the human services field preferred.  Prior experience working with underserved communities and/or refugee populations preferred;

  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment;

  • Proven ability to contribute both independently and as a key team member;

  • Self-starter with excellent analytical skills combined with the demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, problem solve, meet deadlines, and manage time effectively;

  • Solid diplomatic and networking skills: the ability to effectively manage a variety of relationships required;

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook);

  • Excellent communications skills, fluency in written and spoken English required;

  • Proficiency in at least one refugee language is strongly desired;

  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly (nights and weekends) throughout the service delivery area.

Working Environment

  • Standard professional office environment; with regular travel throughout service delivery area (home visits, agency visits, service provider visits, airport-pick-ups, etc.) will be required. Service delivery is within 100 miles from San Diego;

  • Reoccurring need to provide services outside of traditional work hours (nights and weekends).
