Stipend: This is an AmeriCorps*VISTA position and therefore pays a stipend of $12,490 annually; medical benefits available through AmeriCorps. This is a fulltime position.

BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  The IRC in Wichita, KS resettles approximately 300 newly-arrived refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship.  The Kansas Refugee Economic Empowerment project began in 2016 and aligns with the Economic Opportunity focus area of the Americorps*VISTA program.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Immigration Coordination Americorps*VISTA will assist in the growth and sustainability of this program which provides low or no cost immigration services to low-income clients each year; the member will plan and coordinate outreach in the community, hire and train immigration volunteers, write grant proposals and build community partnerships. The VISTA member reports to the Immigration Caseworker.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement an outreach plan to attract new partners and clients.
  • Plan, organize and implement monthly citizenship workshops in Wichita.
  • Increase the number of immigration volunteers who support the program; provide the necessary training for new and continuing volunteers to excel in their roles.
  • Develop or improve training materials for volunteers.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with a variety of individuals, groups and organizations in the community to build IRC’s visibility, support immigration services and strengthen the communities capacity to serve the those in need.
  • Develop resource materials for clients such as education information and citizenship study information packets.
  • Increase capacity of citizenship tutoring program.
  • Work with Executive Director and Immigration Caseworker to secure funding for program sustainability; research funding opportunities, compile data and write proposals to secure program funds.  

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree, preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Keen interest in outreach activities and immigration services as poverty alleviation vehicles.
  • Skilled with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point).
  • Demonstrated experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds, cultures and countries.
  • Supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area
  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed.
