Job Description

The IRC has defined a new strategic mission & vision, along with initiatives and key processes to meet strategic objectives. The IT department provides reliable and scalable application development and infrastructure for the IRC’s offices around the world, including technologically challenging locations. IRC’s ITHQ department includes 70 professionals primarily in the US & Nairobi and over 150 IT professionals in 40 counties supporting 13, 000 staff globally.

If so, we are hoping you will join IRC’s Global Information Security (GIS) Team as a Cyber Security Intern. The ideal candidate is a critical thinker who wants to learn more about the importance of data protection in the humanitarian sector. You will receive hands on training for cyber risk principles and assessment and be supported by extraordinary mentors. Working together, we will establish goals, develop learning objectives and conduct regular check-ins to facilitate this learning experience.

Job Overview/Summary: The GIS Cyber Security Intern will assist on projects by learning how to define, design and provide business value within the Global Information Security initiative.  The primary responsibilities include team collaboration to support risk identification, assessment and reporting.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge Base Management and Cyber Risk Reporting: Under the direction of the CISO, assist team members in preparing information, research materials and cyber security reporting. Assist in maintaining documentation including risk management frameworks and working with team members to update our current ISO 27001 based risk report.
  • Communication Support: Perform ongoing development (researching, drafting and editing) of various assessment reports leveraged for intranet content, etc.
  • Other projects and responsibilities as assigned.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Increased knowledge cyber security risk as mentioned above.

  • Increased knowledge of leading risk assessment frameworks.

  • Gaining perspective on how information security direction and support works in a nonprofit and how it effects the protection of beneficiary and IRC staff data.


Qualifications

  • Education: must be enrolled in an accredited university/college program to receive credit

  • Demonstrated Skills and Competencies: Proficient background in networking, application development or operating systems.  High proficiency in MS Windows and Microsoft Office Suite Applications - specifically, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word. Effective interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Language Skills: English, both written and verbal; Ability to communicate professionally with all levels of management. Written French and/or Arabic a definite plus.

  • Certificates or Licenses: N/A

  • Other: Self-directed and able to work without supervision; Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or Information Technology or four or more years of meaningful work experience

  • Previous experience in a technology environment in system administration or application development.

  • Experience or competence working in an intercultural professional environment and/or the International Development sector.
