Job Description

The Director, Major Giving will lead the regional major giving program by managing a portfolio of major giving prospects (defined as donors, prospective donors, and suspects with wealth capacity ratings of at least $100K and up to $4.9MM), and manage a regional team of front-line fundraisers.

The Director, Major Giving will craft and execute fundraising strategies for her/his/their portfolio, and will mentor and guide the team to optimize the size and impact of gifts to IRC.The Director, Major Giving will also be responsible for transforming the team –from one that primarily worked behind the scenes with IRC leaders, to one that encourages fundraisers to function as relationship managers, using donor-centric fundraising practices and deploying program and IRC leaders throughout donor life cycle to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward six and seven-figure gifts.The Director, Major Giving will collaborate with the Donor Relations team in order to secure proposals, donor engagement communications and touch points, as well as stewardship reports.

Major Responsibilities


  • Manage a portfolio of 75 high-capacity major giving donors, prospects and suspects that results in retaining donors and realizing ever increasing size gifts at the high six and seven-figure level.
  • Travel and meet with a portfolio of donors, prospects and suspects across the entire assigned region which encompasses several IRC designated Tier 1 and Tier 2 metro markets.
  • Establish a pace for the team’s front-line activities, resulting in funds raised personally and when appropriate with the help of IRC leaders and program staff at the six and seven-figure level.
  • Achieve goals and metrics related to donor visits, solicitations, gifts and pledges closed and other critical KPIs.

Team Management

  • Supervise, manage, and coach the regional Major Giving team.
  • In partnership with the Senior Director of Major and Event Giving, craft, implement, and execute high-level strategies to expand the national pool of major giving prospects.
  • Collaborate with the Prospect Development and Donor Relations teams to ensure major giving donors benefit from moving engagement opportunities that galvanize their loyalty and result in donor retention and increased future giving.
  • Mentor the Major Giving team and guide their professional growth at IRC and within the fundraising profession.



Bachelor’s degree required.

Advanced degrees and/or related certifications a plus.


Work Experience:

Minimum 8 to 10 years of progressive nonprofit fundraising experience with demonstrated expertise in major giving, especially closing $1MM+ gifts.

Experience successfully managing and retaining fundraising teams.

Experience with Planned Giving a plus. 


Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

Work successfully in a complex, fast-paced organization serving multiple stakeholders.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as an overall ability to be clear and concise in all communications.

Strong organizational and time-management skills; proven ability to prioritize and deliver on time.

Ability to work both independently and in a dynamic, cross-functional team structure.

Ability to manage and work through change in a proactive and positive manner.

Have a can-do attitude with a flexible disposition to respond to fast-paced, shifting priorities.

Experience using databases required; technology expertise is important.

Working Environment: Standard office work environment and options to work from home more than one day per week.  Successful candidate must be available to work evenings and to travel domestically as required.  Occasional international travel, as needed.
