The UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) is implementing the region-wide Data Framework and its Knowledge Management activities, which requires documenting good practices around Data work in the region, migration of existing content to a new digital platform and creation of new sites (content management).
Following the publication of 2019 Knowledge for Children in Africa catalogue, a site needs to be set-up to bring together publications that come from a variety of sources from three UNICEF regions. This site will contain the summary of publications, name(s) of author(s), etc. in a searchable database. In addition, support will be provided to the Regional Office Data pillar on managing and monitoring data related evidence generation, as needed.
Purpose
Under the guidance and supervision of the Knowledge Management Specialist in UNICEFs’ Regional Office, the intern will help to enhance the quality and access to knowledge products across sectors and within the data and evidence pillars of ESARO. The following section will describe the tasks that the intern is expected to contribute to.
Main Tasks
- Support the set-up of a site (Knowledge for Children in Africa) on SharePoint that will bring together the publications from three UNICEF regions. This includes development of the platform, gathering the publications and uploading them in a searchable database
- Content Management: Contribute to the set-up of collaboration sites in SharePoint by creating pages, links to other relevant resources, and supporting content migration of working files. This included contributing to the improvement of the Data knowledge sharing site
- Undertake a lesson learned/best practices documentation exercise on how UNICEF Country Offices support Governments in monitoring the SDGs and other child related goals and targets
Conditions of Service
Stipend: In accordance to UNICEF's guidelines, interns will be paid a nominal stipend per month. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.
Travel: Travel costs to and from the duty station can be reimbursed up to a certain amount according to UNICEF's guidelines. Intern is responsible for obtaining the necessary entry visa and arranging their travel to Nairobi. UNICEF will assist only in issuing documents required in visa processing (Note Verbale).
Insurance: UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern's service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan with at least 4-month coverage in Kenya prior to starting his/her internship.
Mandatory Courses: Selected intern will be requested to complete online mandatory courses and submit the certificates prior commencement of the internship.
Education
Completed undergraduate or enrolled in graduate studies (or have graduated within the past two years) in the following areas: communication, education, development studies or a related field.
Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
Required Skills and Experience
- Excellent writing skills
- Excellent use of web development and design tools such as SharePoint.
- Willingness to learn new software will be key to the selection of the candidate.
- Data collection and maintenance experience would be desirable and an added advantage but not a prerequisite.
- Experience with visualization tools preferred (PowerBI, Infogram or other).
- Effective communication skills, excellent written English skills and ability to write clearly and succinctly.
- Knowledge and understanding of humanitarian response and development programmes is an asset.

Eligibility
To be considered for an internship with UNICEF, applicants must meet the following general requirements:
Be at least 18 years old
Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years (please refer to required skills and experience for more details)
Be proficient in at least one of UNICEF's working languages (please refer to required skills and experience).
Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office; and
Have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to.
