Job Description

The Communications Intern will assist the West Texas Office for Refugees (WTOR) with tasks related to raising awareness of the office in Texas Region 1 (Abilene, Amarillo, El Paso, Lubbock, Midland, Odessa).

COMMITMENT: Hours are flexible, but preferably at least 15 hours per week, Monday - Friday between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and create the West Texas Office for Refugees outreach materials.

  • Find new and creative ways to increase WTOR’s presence in Texas.

  • Research relevant outreach opportunities for WTOR to take part in such as festivals, community events, and school and health fairs.

  • Assist with the creation and publication of WTOR’s monthly electronic newsletter.

  • Other relevant duties as assigned

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • The intern will gain professional experience in community engagement.   

  • The  intern  will  deepen  understanding  of  refugee resettlement and US immigration topics and practices.

Qualifications

  • Strong writing and communication skills; the job will entail editing and creating material such as newsletters, flyers, and informational content.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including outlook, word, excel, publisher, or other design software.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential;

  • Prior experience in a non-profit setting and with refugees beneficial, but not required;

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently;

  • Must be comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment;

  • Flexibility and ability to juggle multiple tasks successfully.

This is an unpaid internship position. No financial compensation, including compensation for relocation, is available.
