Job Description

Position: Refugee Youth Summer Academy Monitoring and Evaluation Intern (2 positions)

Reports to: Education & Learning Manager, Caitlyn Griffith-Heritage

Position Term:  June 1-August 28, 2020

Hours: Minimum 15 hours per week; preference to candidates seeking more hours


Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City.  The Education and Learning Program provides year round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools.

Scope of Work:

The Refugee Youth Summer Academy (RYSA) is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and life skills classes. Field Trips are held on Fridays.

Each Refugee Youth Summer Academy Monitoring and Evaluation Intern will implement key aspects of the RYSA M&E plan monitoring and evaluation tools, including data collection, analysis, and presentation. One M&E Intern will focus on RYSA’s School Readiness assessments, demographics, and attendance data. The other M&E Intern will focus and student feedback mechanisms, academic assessments and the parent survey. The interns will write up and present data at the program’s mid-point and post-program.  

Essential Job Functions:

·Preparing M&E tools for implementation

·Implementation of M&E activities, including data entry

·Managing and analyzing program generated data

·Writing up results of monitoring and evaluation activities

·Completing a final report and presentation on RYSA M&E for 2020

·Other related duties as assigned

Learning Objectives:

·Student will learn how to design program monitoring and evaluation tools.

·Student will learn how to implement program monitoring and evaluation tools in a fast paced environment.

·Student will learn how to analyze monitoring and evaluation data for immediate use.


·Current graduate student or recent grad, preferably in Education, International Affairs, Public Policy, or related field

·Experience and/or graduate level coursework in monitoring & evaluation research methods, and quantitative and qualitative analysis

·Experience working with refugee or immigrant students and families, excellent rapport with youth and adults of diverse backgrounds

·Demonstrated ability to work independently on projects with minimal supervision

·Strong interpersonal skills

·Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·Fluency in a second language helpful (such as: Spanish, French, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian, Fulani, Wolof, Mandingo, Haitian Creole, Nepali, Tibetan, Tagalog, Tigrinya, Bengal)

·Fluent in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Word
