Org. Setting and Reporting

The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) of the Department of Operational Support is committed to continuously improve the environmental sustainability of its operations. It is seeking 1 (one) intern to support its environmental management efforts. FCAS provides, inter alia, building and waste management services, travel, event and catering services. This internship is for six (6) months. The internship is UNPAID and full time. Interns work 5 days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the section to whom they are assigned. The intern will be given responsibilities that will assist their learning and experience in data gathering/management/reporting, project coordination, and practical aspects of environmental sustainability management in a large and complex international organization.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief of the Administrative Section, and within delegated authority, the intern will assist in the following duties:
• Contribute to the development of an environmental management system (EMS) in line with ISO 14,001 standards for the operations and facilities management at the UN Secretariat in New York;
• Contribute to preparing the annual Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory for the UN Secretariat in New York (buildings, travel and transport);
• Assist with the administrative and technical coordination of sustainability projects in waste, energy and other aspects of environmental management;
• Contribute to the development of sustainability communication campaigns, including creating innovative initiatives relevant to behaviour change and designing/drafting communication materials; and
•Other related duties, as required.

• Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology.

Education

To qualify for an internship by the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:(1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);(2) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or(3) Have graduated with a university degree as defined in (1) and (2) above and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year period of graduation;
• Be computer literate in standard software applications, including MS Suite (Word, Power Point, Excel);
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For thisposition, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

A person who is the child or sibling of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations. An applicant who bears to a staff member any other family relationship may be engaged as an intern, provided that he or she shall not be assigned to the same work unit of the staff member nor placed under the direct or indirect supervision of the staff member. For purposes of this instruction, "child" means (i) the child of a staff member; (ii) the child of the spouse of a staff member (stepchild); and (iii) the spouse of a child of a staff member or a staff member's spouse (son- or daughter-in-law). "Sibling" includes the child of both or either parent of a staff member and the child.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a nonimmigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term “sexual exploitation” means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. The term “sexual abuse” means the actual or threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature, whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions. The term “sexual harassment” means any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation, when such conduct interferes with work, is made a condition of employment or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment, and when the gravity of the conduct warrants the termination of the perpetrator’s working relationship. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
