For every child, dedication

The Associate Director, Health leads UNICEF’s work on Health. Its purpose is to:

  1. Provide intellectual, technical, managerial and advocacy leadership in the formulation and implementation of its health strategy and programmes, advocacy and programming within UNICEF’s overall mission and to advise the Executive Director on related policy matters.  This includes strengthening UNICEF engagement at global, regional and country level within UNICEF’s overall mission of promoting the rights of every child, everywhere.
  2. Contributes to effective management of the Division as a member of the Programme Division Management Team including supervising and leading the health staff of the section while building strong regular working relationship with the Regional Health Advisors. The Associate Director also works in close collaboration with the other sections in the Division and other Divisions,  counter parts other UN Agencies, and Government officials, international and local media, subject matter experts, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors as well as different parts of private sector to support delivery on the outputs to which UNICEF has committed in the Strategic Plan.
  3. Provide, ensure and manage high quality technical advice and support to UNICEF regional and country offices in the health programme and provide high-quality advice to the senior management of UNICEF in these areas.

To qualify as a champion for every child you will have…

Qualifications:

  • An Advanced University Degree (Master’s level) in Public Health, Medicine, or in the other social sciences is required.  
  • A minimum of 13 years professional experience including in low- and middle-income countries and with at least 10 years at the international level, including in senior leadership and management positions; demonstrated capacity to lead teams; wide recognition in the profession.
  • Experience with UNICEF field programmes is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English required and proficiency in another UN language desirable.

Person Profile

  • Excellent knowledge and familiarity with key issues in policy development, analysis, programme development and implementation of health programs.
  • Proven competencies in the management of multicultural teams oriented to the provision of technical support and analysis.
  • Experience responding to emergencies is desirable.
  • Proven communication skills and proven record in interaction with donor community and fundraising.

This position is classified as “rotational” which means the incumbent is expected to rotate to another duty station upon completion of their tour of duty.
