The mission of the Green Climate Fund is to assist developing countries to respond to climate change while bringing prosperity to their peoples.

Established in 2010, the GCF invests in transformational climate projects in the developing world. The Fund makes an ambitious contribution to global climate action and channels significant financial resources into developing countries to help build low-emission and climate-resilient societies.  It is country-driven and undertakes actions that reflect the circumstances of each country concerned and its national aspirations. The GCF is a key enabler of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Since its establishment, the GCF has approved 111 projects in 99 countries and has committed USD 5.0 billion in climate finance. In addition, it has built up an extensive program to support developing countries to identify their needs, in particular, those who are most vulnerable to climate change impacts.

Position description 

The Specialist will be responsible for supporting GCF’s external relations strategy by developing key messages and multimedia communications assets to shape, refine and raise GCF’s profile and brand image among high-profile audiences.

 

Duties and responsibilities

Purpose

  • Develop communications plans that foster engagement of external stakeholders to enhance GCF’s image, influence, and achievements in climate finance.
  • Produce creative, innovative communications with a focus on high-level audiences, global leaders, political influencers and others who champion GCF in policy arenas.
  • Showcase the impact of GCF’s activities upon global efforts to combat climate change and enhance GCF’s brand identity and profile in global fora.

 

Engagement

  • Build GCF’s media relations & employ impactful digital communication strategies.
  • Advise external clients in support of external communications and produce interactive communication materials for different channels (e.g., website, social media, newsletters, publications, speeches, events).
  • Develop and deliver result-oriented communications to support RM. Advises the Fund on approaches/modalities to integrate private sector finance engagement strategies, with particular emphasis on the financial sector and MSMEs, across the Fund’s programmes;

 

Delivery

  • Optimize workplan to ensure timely delivery of communications products that meet GCF’s branding standards, using established procedures and protocols.
  • Implement communications strategies, ensuring consistent messaging across all projects and services, to support GCF’s external relations and convey GCF’s objectives, activities and replenishment goals.

 

 

Required experience and qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in communications, journalism, international relations, finance, economics, sustainable development, climate policy, environmental sciences, etc.
  • More than 7 years of experience with an international organization, PR agency, private sector, government or non-profit, with experience managing and delivering complex communications projects.
  • Good understanding of multilateral processes and climate finance, good political judgment and specialized in speechwriting, media relations, social media, and/or publications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (Native level); knowledge of another UN language an advantage.
  • Demonstrated capacity to establish and maintain relationships with key partners, including the ability to represent GCF and interface effectively with senior government, private sector, and CSO officials.
  • Experienced working with colleagues from different functions and cultures.
